Climbing life insurance

Getting life insurance for climbers is extremely important, especially for those with a young family or dependents.

Speaking from many years of experience in working with climbers as well as being involved in the climbing industry it’s important to have the right cover to protect your family. As a company, we are motivated to help rock climbers to get cover because we have lived and breathed mountaineering for decades.

It’s important to understand the various elements involved with the sport and how rock climbing can affect life insurance.

How popular is climbing in the UK?

According to figures from the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), there are around 150,000 active climbers in the UK. There are also reports that suggest there are as many as 1 million people who take part in indoor climbing (figures from the Association of British Climbing Walls).

Our climbing background at iam|INSURED

We’re not just your average life insurance business that just tells you what you need and doesn’t understand your situation.

Our expertise has been built on many years of being involved in the mountaineering industry from an early age. Our director (Dan Sharpe-Szunko) has been in the mountain sports field since a very young age and understands the risks and the rewards.

Why do climbers need life insurance?

People who take part in climbing will be well aware of the risks that are involved, especially those at a higher level of the sport.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen and as climbers, we are also exposed to other environmental factors that are out of our control. Many climbers have been involved in some sort of accident or are close to someone that has experienced the more dangerous side of climbing.

Getting the right cover to protect our families is extremely important and especially if you are exposed to these risks.

Types of climbing:

  • Mountaineering
  • Solo climbing
  • Free climbing
  • Bouldering
  • Walking or Scrambling
  • Indoor climbing
  • Ice climbing (winter mountaineering)

Does life insurance payout for climbers?

Put simply, the answer is YES your family will receive a payout on your life insurance policy if you die whilst taking part in climbing.

There are no exclusions on standard life cover through the mainstream insurance providers, so as long as you disclose your climbing, then you’re covered.

Your family will receive a cash lump sum that can e used for a number of reasons to help them financially in the future, including:

  • Clear mortgage debts
  • Pay off other debts
  • Property rent
  • School fees
  • Household bills
  • Other expenditure

You just need to figure out how much cover your family will need to protect them in the future if anything happened to you.

Will critical illness cover climbing?

A critical illness cover policy will payout a cash lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious illness or if you are seriously injured.

Your critical illness cover policy can provide you with a vital piece of financial support if you are unable to work for a period of time. A payout can be used for any number of reasons, but the most common reasons are:

  • Mortgage or rent payments
  • Pay loans and credit cards
  • Alterations or adjustments to the home
  • Medical treatments or care
  • School fees
  • Household bills and cost of living

Most critical illness policies can be extremely useful for climbers as they provide cover for things like:

  • Serious injuries (e.g. loss of limbs, major trauma, etc.)
  • Total and permanent disability
  • Heart attack

You should check your policy wording closely to make sure that it fits your needs and requirements.

Does rock climbing affect life insurance?

The simple answer is NO, your life insurance will be the same policy and the same cover, regardless of whether you climb or not.

Life insurance is the same product for everyone and offers the same level of protection, regardless of your circumstances. Many people often mistakenly think that they won’t be covered for certain things or that life insurance won’t payout.

The reality is that life insurance pays out approximately 98% of all claims which makes it the highest payout rate of any type of insurance.
