Aviva fracture cover was originally launched in 2016 to provide extra financial protection to manual workers and people in driving jobs. The optional benefit only costs £4 per month and pays out up to £6,000 for fractured bones, to help cover household bills and expenses if you couldn’t to work.

This week, Aviva has enhanced its popular fracture cover product to help more policyholders to get support as they recover from an injury. The optional benefit pays out for 18 different types of fractures and 11 of those have now been increased, and 7 pay out the maximum £6,000.
Since 2016, fracture cover from Aviva has paid out over £10 million and has helped to protect thousands of policyholders. This is also now one of the most popular benefits, with several other life insurance companies providing similar benefits.

What is Aviva fracture cover?
Aviva life insurance, critical illness, and income protection customers can add fracture cover to their policies if they apply through an independent insurance adviser. This additional benefit can offer some peace of mind that you will receive financial support if a bone fracture prevents you from working as normal.
You will receive a pay out of between £2,000 – £6,000 depending on the specific fracture that you have. This could money could make a big difference to your household’s financial situation if you can’t work or need to work reduced hours because of your injury.
Who can apply for Aviva fracture cover?
Anyone can apply for Aviva fracture cover, but it is particularly useful for manual workers who may be more likely to get injured. According to Aviva, 7 out of 10 people who claim on fracture cover are:
- Builders
- Warehouse workers
- Factory workers
- Delivery drivers
Workers in these fields can find it more difficult to recover from fractures without needing time off work, as their job roles involve a lot of manual labour. The pay out from Aviva’s fracture cover benefit allows you to take more time off to recover without worrying about how you will pay your bills.
What does Aviva fracture cover pay out for?
Aviva will pay out up to £6,000 per bone fracture and covers 18 specific injuries which are:

*excludes fractured fingers or thumbs.
These are the latest pay out amounts announced by Aviva in November 2024, with 7 of 18 injuries now eligible for the full pay out of £6,000.

What doesn’t Aviva fracture cover pay out for?
When you apply for Aviva fracture cover, you will be given a set list of policy exclusions. Aviva may refuse to pay out for a fracture, typically if the injury occurs during specific activities, such as:
- Mountain biking (includes BMX).
- Boxing, cage fighting, or martial arts.
- Rugby (includes Gaelic football).
- Horse riding.
- Riding a motorbike (all forms including practice on and off-road).
Other policies such as personal accident insurance will pay out in a wider range of scenarios and for a larger number of injuries and hospitalisation. If you are particularly worried about accidental injuries, it’s worth considering if a personal accident insurance policy is more suitable for you.

Does Aviva pay out for all types of fractures?
Aviva will not pay out for hairline fractures, stress fractures, chips or microfractures and you are only covered for injuries that occur after the first 7 days of your policy.
How much does Aviva fracture cover cost?
Aviva allows you to add fracture cover to any life insurance, critical illness, or income protection policy for only £4 per month extra.
This is a small additional cost each month, but you should consider if it’s worth it for you to add this cover on and whether you are likely to make a claim. There are also certain scenarios that Aviva won’t pay out for, and standard personal accident insurance does cover more injuries and prices start from around £9 per month.
