Cost of living payment update 2023/2024

The cost of living crisis in the UK has led to thousands of families and vulnerable households struggling with their monthly bills.

The cost of living payment scheme has been a lifeline for many people, adding an extra boost to funds that is much needed. With the cost of living crisis continuing to grow, it is good to hear this government support has been extended through 2023/24.

Who is eligible for the government cost of living payments 2023?

The cost of living support payments will be available to anyone claiming one or more of these benefits or tax credits:

  • Child tax credit
  • Universal credit
  • Working tax credit
  • Pension credit
  • Income support
  • Job seeker’s allowance or ‘JSA’ (Income based)
  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance or ‘ESA’

You need to have received a payment (benefits/tax credits) during the qualifying period (26/01/23 – 25/02/23) to be eligible for this form of government cost of living support.

When is the next cost of living payment?

Following last year’s cost of living support scheme, the first instalment of government support will begin paying out from 25th April 2023.

Cost of living payment dates 2023 – 2024

Here we have the current confirmed cost of living payment dates for the next year. At the moment we only have specific dates for the first payment, with the other dates to be confirmed later this year.

First cost of living payment – paid between 25th April – 17th May 2023

Second cost of living payment – expected Autumn 2023 (date TBC)

Other cost of living payments

As well as the general cost of living scheme, there are more specific payments available to certain vulnerable groups and those in receipt of specific benefits. This includes:

Pensioner cost of living payment – pensioners will receive a £300 payment in Winter 2023 (a continuation of last year’s winter fuel payment)

Universal credit cost of living payment – you will be eligible for the above cost of living scheme provided your Universal Credit payments weren’t reduced to £0 during the qualifying period

Other cost of living support and resources

There are also other forms of cost of living support such as the government’s energy bill support scheme (Energy Price Guarantee) to help those who are struggling.

In some of our previous blogs, we have covered various forms of cost-of-living support and updates to these schemes. We will include all these resources below for further information on this topic.
