Love Your Liver Month

It is officially Love Your Liver Month 2023. This is celebrated every January to raise awareness of the impact of liver disease in the UK. After overindulging over Christmas, January is the perfect time for reflection and working to improve our health throughout 2023.

According to statistics from the British Liver Trust, 90% of liver disease cases are preventable but 3 in 4 people will be diagnosed at a stage where lifestyle changes won’t make a difference.

This means it is incredibly important to look after our livers as best we can before it is too late. When you have loved ones to take care of, it is vital to also take care of your own health too.

In this blog we will explain more about Love Your Liver Month, what liver disease is and ways you can prevent it.

The liver is one of the main organs in our bodies and is responsible for a lot of key things that keep us happy and healthy. Your liver works hard to filter out harmful chemicals from your body, helps you to resist infections and produces proteins, cholesterol and other things we need.

What is liver disease?

Liver disease is a preventable illness in most cases and refers to any medical condition that leads to liver damage and affects liver function.

There are several different types of liver disease, each with different causes. The 3 main causes of liver damage are:

  • Obesity
  • Undiagnosed hepatitis
  • Alcohol abuse

Symptoms of liver disease

If liver disease is in its earlier stages, there are often no noticeable symptoms to start with.

Symptoms of liver disease include:

  • Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Swollen legs or ankles
  • Itching
  • Chronic fatigue and feeling weak
  • Nausea
  • Bruising easily
  • Loss of appetite

How to prevent liver disease

Preventing the chance of damaging your liver health can be as simple as making small lifestyle changes. Losing weight and reducing how much you drink a day and any drug use can all contribute towards a healthier liver.

Vaccinating yourself against conditions such as hepatitis can also help you avoid liver damage, as these conditions can harm the liver. Certain medications can also lead to cirrhosis of the liver. It is wise to read directions on any medications carefully to avoid this where possible.

You could be more likely to develop problems with your liver if a close family member also have a condition that affect the liver. Genetic conditions like haemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease can cause liver damage.

  • 90% of liver disease cases are preventable
  • 1,000 liver transplants are performed each year
  • 40 people die each day from liver disease in the UK

There are factors in your general health and lifestyle that could increase your risk of developing liver disease in the future. This includes:

There are several types of liver problems that would be classified as forms of liver disease. These are:
