Can I get life insurance with atrial fibrillation?

YES – it’s normally possible to get life insurance when you have atrial fibrillation. Cover can often be cheaper than you would think but some companies will be a better option than others.

We’re here to tell you everything you need to know and the important things insurers will look at. When you apply for life insurance with any medical condition, insurers will consider:

  • Your age
  • Your overall health
  • Your symptoms
  • Any treatments or medications
  • Your general lifestyle

There are a few main options for life insurance including:

How does atrial fibrillation life insurance work?

If you’ve never looked into buying life insurance before, you might not be too sure how the process works. It can be simple to get the right insurance, especially if you speak to the right people.

People with medical conditions will usually find that they need to answer a few extra questions. This isn’t anything to worry about and just helps the insurer get a better idea of your overall health.

When you have atrial fibrillation, you could be asked questions like:

  • When you were diagnosed with AFib
  • How often you experience symptoms and how severe are they?
  • Was this condition caused by angina, heart valve problems, cardiomyopathy, thyroid problems, stroke, alcohol, blood pressure or caffeine?
  • Have you been prescribed medication or treatment?
  • Are you waiting on the results of any referrals, surgery or investigations? E.g. echocardiogram
  • Have you ever been hospitalised due to atrial fibrillation? Was this recent?

Not all companies will ask the same questions, so you might find you are asked for more or less information. It’s also common to be asked for a GP medical report for further information.

Does life insurance pay out for atrial fibrillation?

YES – if you were to die due to atrial fibrillation or other heart conditions, your policy will pay out a cash lump sum to your loved ones.

Atrial fibrillation alone shouldn’t be life threatening, but there are other linked conditions that could lead to death. We always recommend making sure you are well protected in case of this, especially if you have children or a mortgage to think about.

Does critical illness cover pay out for atrial fibrillation?

It can be very worrying to be diagnosed with a heart condition, particularly if you need time off work to recover. Luckily, if you already have critical illness cover you might be able to claim for complications related to atrial fibrillation.

This can be very useful in offering some extra financial support at a hard time. Some things that might be covered by critical illness cover:

  • Surgery for cardiac arrythmia
  • Cardioversion for cardiac arrythmia
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

You can use the money from a critical illness pay out in any way you wish to. Many people choose to use it for important expenses such as:

  • Mortgage or rent payments
  • Help with the cost of living
  • Any adjustments to your home
  • Private medical treatment

Will income protection pay out for atrial fibrillation?

YES – if you needed time off work due to atrial fibrillation, your income protection policy should pay out. The best thing about income protection is it will pay out for most medical issues, provided you are signed off work for 4 or more weeks.

There are a few symptoms of AFib which could mean you need some time off work:

  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Palpitations

Income protection will cover around 60% of your usual income, which can be a lifeline if you can’t work. These policies are also extremely flexible, allowing you to decide exactly how much cover you need and how long the policy will pay out for.

Will I need a medical to get atrial fibrillation life insurance?

YES – most of the time anyone with a heart condition will need to provide extra medical information. Don’t worry this isn’t a time-consuming process or something that will cause you loads of extra hassle.

The most common thing you could be asked for is a medical report from your doctor or GP. The insurer will be able to get this directly from your doctor, so you won’t need to sort anything yourself.

How much does atrial fibrillation life insurance cost?

Here are the main factors insurers will think about when deciding the cost of your cover:

  • Your age
  • Height and weight
  • Lifestyle
  • Occupation
  • How much cover you need (£s)
  • Policy term (how long you want cover for)
  • Smoker status

We understand how important finding the right price is, especially for something like life insurance. The last thing anyone wants is to realise later that they could have gotten a better deal.

There are some simple ways to save on your life insurance, but you need to think about why you are buying it too. It’s too easy to look at a price and see only the numbers and not the value of the product.

How to get cheaper life insurance with atrial fibrillation

There are a few quick and easy ways to save some money on your life insurance. Our main suggestion is to make sure you’re speaking to the right insurers.

Most insurance companies won’t have the right experience or expertise to give the best advice to someone with medical conditions. No one wants to pay too much and here’s how you can avoid this happening.

The top 4 ways to save on your cover are:

  1. Make some lifestyle changes: Simple changes to your lifestyle such as losing weight or quitting smoking can equal significantly lower monthly costs.
  2. Avoid applying straight after treatment or medication changes: Applying at the right time can make a huge difference to how much you pay. Applying not long after switching medication or treatment can make things more complicated.
  3. Speak to the right insurers: Some insurers are a better option than others for people with heart conditions.
  4. Talk to a life insurance expert: Sometimes it can be hard to know what your best options are. Our life insurance specialists will be able to help you compare policies and work out the right choice to protect your loved ones.
