Life insurance for Diabetics Type 2

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and you need life insurance to protect your family, here’s how it all works. Applying for life insurance with any pre-existing medical condition can be frustrating and time-consuming, but this process can often be made simpler by speaking to a life insurance expert.

Getting life cover is the best way to protect your family, home, or business if anything happens to you. If you’ve got type 2 diabetes then it can cause some extra stress that you don’t need.

We speak to people with medical conditions who’ve had problems with other companies. In most cases, our experts can get life insurance, critical illness cover, and income protection for people who have struggled in the past.

60-Second Summary – Life insurance for Diabetics Type 2 Guide 2024

Working out the right life insurance options can be tricky, especially if you have a condition like type 2 diabetes. That’s why it’s normally best to talk to a life insurance expert who knows all about diabetes. They can help you to easily compare quotes from different companies to find the best and most affordable cover for you.

  • Some life insurance companies will give better prices to people with type 2 diabetes. It’s a good idea to compare quotes to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
  • How much you will pay for your insurance depends on factors like how old you are and your general health and lifestyle. If you’ve got diabetes, insurers will also check what your Hba1c levels are and if there any other related conditions like Retinopathy.
  • The best way to cut costs on your life insurance is to apply when you’re in good health and your Hba1c levels are lower.
  • Policies like income protection and critical illness cover can also be useful for people with type 2 diabetes. Each of these policies can help to provide extra financial security to protect you and your family.

You can get life insurance with diabetes and it can be much easier for people with type 2 diabetes. The most common type of diabetes is type 2 (approximately 90% of all diabetics are type 2)  and so many insurers will be able to offer cover. You’re more likely to get a life insurance policy now than ever before as well.

If you need this type of policy to protect your family, and you’ve got type 2 diabetes, then making the right decision is important. One of the biggest decisions is making sure that you apply to the right insurer. Getting the best life insurance for type 2 diabetics is mainly about speaking to the right insurer or an expert.

Millions of people across the UK have type 2 diabetes, and some people will experience more severe symptoms than others depending on their health and lifestyle. This simple video from Diabetes UK explains more about what type 2 diabetes is and the main symptoms to watch out for.

What Is Type 2 Diabetes? | 2 Minute Guide | Diabetes UK

Around 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2, making it the most common type for diabetes life insurance applications. Type 2 diabetes is usually linked to lifestyle factors like diet or genetics.

You’ll find that many popular insurance companies offer life insurance for those with Type 2 diabetes. Prices can differ a lot between insurers, so it’s wise to get quotes from a few or chat with a specialist broker who can hunt down multiple quotes for you.

Key factors for type 2 diabetes life insurance:

There are also other types of insurance available for people with type 2 diabetes including critical illness insurance, income protection insurance and health insurance.

Note: Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed later in life though some people may be diagnosed during childhood. Many type 2 diabetes diagnoses are related to health and lifestyle and can affect your options when buying life insurance. If you are finding it difficult to get a fair price, it can be helpful to speak with a diabetes life insurance expert for support and guidance.

When you’re hunting for the cheapest rates for life cover, you’ve got plenty of options. But, if you’ve got a pre-existing medical condition like type 2 diabetes then you might have slightly less choice.

Deciding which insurer is by far the most important choice because prices can change for people with type 2 diabetes. You could get covered with some of the usual names such as:

Life Insurance provider reviews

You may also be able to get cover from other insurers who aren’t as well-known including new specialist providers like Bluezone.

You might be put off applying for life insurance because you’ve got type 2 diabetes, which is a common opinion. If you’ve applied in the past then you could feel put off by a bad experience, or you could just think it’s a waste of time.

Obviously, you’d expect us to say, “buy life insurance from us, we’re amazing”… but it’s actually something to consider. An expert like us with over 20 year’s experience and who has helped thousands of people like you to get cover, is a sensible option.

Does my weight make life insurance more expensive?

One of the most common health issues linked to type 2 diabetes, is high BMI (Body Mass Index) or Obesity. Another misconception of someone with this condition is that they’re overweight, which isn’t always true.

All insurance applications include the same questions about height and weight for health purposes. Some insurance providers now ask slightly different questions as well as this which are:

  • Waist size (inches)
  • Dress size

It is possible to help reduce the cost of life insurance for someone with type 2 diabetes over a period of time. Because this condition is linked to lifestyle, you can make some changes to your behaviour which can help.

Some of the best ways to improve your lifestyle and potentially get cheaper cover include:

  • Diet: You could change your diet which can have a major impact on things like your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol readings especially
  • Exercise: Taking regular exercise is a great way to help manage your type 2 diabetes and reduce your mortality risks
  • Treatment/medication: If you take medication for your diabetes, such as Metformin, then you could help to manage your condition better and reduce your blood sugar levels (Hba1c / Mmol)

Some life insurance products offer ‘instant cover’ or ‘guaranteed acceptance’ without medical questions. Guaranteed life insurance policies are indeed much easier and quicker to buy, but there are certain risks with these types of cover, especially for conditions like diabetes.

Usually, these types of cover will ‘exclude’ anything that is pre-existing and anything linked to that pre-existing condition. Diabetes is a chronic condition and can be linked to a number of other health risks, such as Cardiovascular disease. You might therefore be excluded for things like a heart attack or stroke which are major risks.

Our advice is always to check to see if standard life insurance is available first, as this won’t have any exclusions usually.

This is a great way to protect yourself and your family, if you get diagnosed with a serious illness, such as cancer, heart attack, and stroke. It is becoming more common to be able to get critical illness cover with type 2 diabetes and more insurers are offering this type of cover.

You can now get critical illness cover if you’ve got type 2 diabetes as long as your condition is reasonably well managed. Some of the main things that insurers will look at are:

  • Smokers: If you’re a smoker then you are less likely to get this type of cover
  • Diabetes complications: As long as you’ve not had any diabetes-related complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, or nephropathy, then you should be able to get cover
  • BMI (height and weight): Your BMI is linked to this type of cover so as long as your BMI isn’t too high then you can get a policy
  • Blood sugar levels (Hba1c / Mmol): Generally people with reading below 9 will be able to get critical illness cover

It’s been difficult previously to get an income protection policy if you’ve got type 2 diabetes. Luckily there are now a number of options for this type of cover for people with type 2 diabetes.

Income protection is the best way to protect your monthly household bills if you’re unable to work because of illness or an accident. You can now get this type of policy from a number of insurers if you’ve got this type of diabetes.

There are also now income protection policies which are available exclusively through a select number of companies like us. This is a fantastic policy with no medical underwriting that will cover your pre-existing medical condition after a 12 months qualifying period.

It’s possible that in some cases and with certain insurers, you’ll need to give permission to see your medical records. It depends on how well managed your diabetes is and whether you’ve declared any other medical conditions.

Be prepared that you could be asked to consent to let the insurance company see your medical report. All you need to do is sign a declaration (potentially electronically / e-sign) which allows the insurance provider to access your GP records.

There also might be certain circumstances where an insurer might want you to have a medical. With type 2 diabetes, it might be to get an up to date reading for your blood glucose levels, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

On average, you might pay a small amount more for life cover with type 2 diabetes depending on your age, health, and medical history. Life insurance rates for this particular condition can also vary dramatically from one insurer to another. It’s incredibly important to make sure that you apply to an insurance provider that’s good for this condition.

Your life insurance premiums can vary depending on who you apply to as much as what your health situation is. So you’ve got to be very careful about which insurance company or broker you deal with.

Ideally, you’ll speak to a medical conditions expert and they’ll walk you through the process to get you the cheapest cover.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?

With Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin. This is because the body attacks the cells that make it.

With Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas gradually produces less insulin and the body becomes resistant to it.

What causes Type 2 diabetes?

Main causes of type 2 diabetes include:

  • Genetics (family history)
  • Being overweight
  • Not being physically active
  • Insulin resistance
  • Hormonal issues

How is Type 2 diabetes treated?

Type 2 diabetes is usually treated by medication in tablet form such as Metformin.

You may end up needing to take insulin if other medicines stop working.

Can I get life insurance with pre-existing conditions?

Yes, you will be able to get life insurance with almost any pre-existing medical condition, as long as it is not terminal. If traditional life insurance is not available due to the severity of your symptoms, then there are other guaranteed and specialist life insurance options, such as:

  • Accidental death
  • Over 50s life insurance
  • Guaranteed life insurance

Some of the most common examples of life insurance with pre-existing conditions are:

  • Overweight or High BMI life insurance
  • Diabetes life insurance (e.g. Type 2 or Type 1 diabetes)
  • Cancer life insurance
  • Heart attack or heart disease life insurance
  • Mental health life insurance
  • Multiple Sclerosis life insurance
  • Autoimmune disorders life insurance
  • HIV life insurance

There are literally thousands of types and variations of pre-exisiting medical conditions and so your situation is likely to be different to someone else. Life insurance with pre-existing conditions will take a number of elements in to account:

  • Severity and type of symptoms
  • Dates of diagnosis, episodes or attacks, and treatments
  • Any ongoing treatment and medications

Your life insurance premiums will be based on your own individual circumstances and how much cover you need. You should be able to adjust the levels of cover to suit your budget and it’s just as important to make sure that you at least have some cover in place.

What does Martin Lewis say about life insurance with pre-existing conditions?

MoneySavingExpert.com suggests that life insurance will ‘cost a lot more’ with a pre-existing medical condition. This is not true and it really does depend on your own individual circumstances so don’t be put off by this as they are not experts in this area.

It is true that some circumstances where the pre-existing medical condition is serious or severe, premiums can be higher to reflect the additional mortality risks. Ultimately, your life insurance premiums are unfortunately based on how likely you are to claim or if you have a higher chance of death within the policy term.

Martin Lewis doesn’t provide any real substance to his comment about pre-existing conditions life insurance and that’s not good enough. You should speak to a medical life insurance specialist to get a fully underwritten quote before you make any final decisions about whether or not you can afford to protect your family.

How much is life insurance with pre-existing conditions?

Most traditional life insurance providers will accept applications for people with pre-existing medical conditions. Often, you will have a number of potential options from several different insurance providers so you can usually save money as well by shopping around.

Historically you might have had less offers when you apply for life insurance with pre-existing conditions, but fortunately that is changing. Most of the more well-known high street life insurance brands are now offering more competitive rates and more flexible underwriting.

Top tips to save money on life insurance with pre-existing conditions:

  • Speak to pre-existing medical conditions specialist (these companies will understand the market better and should know which insurers will be cheapest for you)
  • Shop around and get different quotes (same as everything else, by shopping around you’ll get a better idea of what a good price is and what different companies offer)
  • Apply at the best time (timing can be important when applying for life insurance with pre-existing conditions, usually when symptoms are stable and not before or after treatment)

There are also other things to take into consideration, such as if you’re a smoker or if your weight is higher than normal. Can you do anything to improve your situation that might help to reduce your life insurance premiums.

Best life insurance for pre-existing conditions?

The best life insurance for pre-existing conditions will be different for each individual, based on their circumstances and the details of their health or medical history. There are certainly some insurance providers who are better for people with pre-existing medical conditions than others, such as:

  • The Exeter (better for people with more severe symptoms and serious health problems)
  • Legal & General (can sometimes be good for certain pre-existing medical conditions, especially mild to moderate symptoms)
  • Royal London (offers a number of specialist products and policies for certain pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes and mental health)
  • Scottish Widows (sometimes good for moderate medical conditions and offers flexible underwriting for certain conditions)
  • The Guardian (also offers flexible underwriting towards some pre-existing medical conditions)
