YES – if you are living with dystonia, you will be covered by your current life insurance policy if you disclosed this when applying or were diagnosed after it was in place.

Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes your muscles to contract which can be confined to one area or more wide spread. Dystonia symptoms can be uncomfortable, but the condition is not life threatening, so many insurers should be able to provide cover for you. If your symptoms are mild or well controlled with medication, you could even find cover for far less than you thought.

Does life insurance pay out for dystonia?

YES – dystonia is not life limiting even though it is a long term condition, usually life long. If you were to pass away from something related (or unrelated), your loved ones will receive a lump sum pay out.

The pay out from a life insurance policy can be used to cover a variety of expenses including:

  • Mortgage or rent payments
  • Funeral expenses
  • Repaying debts
  • School fees
  • Utility bills
  • And more…

How does dystonia life insurance work?

All life insurance applications will include questions about your general health and lifestyle. This helps lenders get a better picture of how healthy you are and what level and cost of cover will work best for you.

If you have medical condition like dystonia, you will also be asked questions relating to this. This could include questions such as:

  • When you were first diagnosed with dystonia
  • The type of dystonia you have (focal dystonia such as blephoraspasm, cervical dystonia or laryngeal dystonia, segmental dystonia, multifocal dystonia, generalised dystonia or hemidystonia)
  • What symptoms you experience and which body parts are affected (hands and eyes affected, multiple areas affected etc)
  • How severe your symptoms are and if you have the ability to work
  • Do you take medication to control your symptoms? (e.g. botulinium toxin)
  • If you have physiotherapy, complementary therapies or other treatments and whether you have had any surgeries related to your dystonia

It is best to be as honest as you can when answering these questions. If you miss out any important information this would make your cover invalid. Your loved ones then may not receive the pay out they need and deserve.

You could also be asked to supply further medical evidence, in the form of a GP report. This isn’t anything to worry about as it is standard practice, and the insurer will arrange this for you.

YES – it is possible to get life insurance if you have dystonia. Certain providers will be better for providing cover to people with medical conditions though, so it is a good idea to shop around.

Before applying you should work out roughly how much cover you want, the length of cover you need and other important details. That will allow you to compare policies across providers, to make sure you are 100% happy with the cover you are choosing.

Can I get critical illness cover with dystonia?

YES – you should be able to get critical illness cover if you have dystonia, but you might need to provide medical records (via a report from your GP) if your symptoms are severe.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms and the insurer you apply to, you could have an exclusion placed on your cover. This simply means you wouldn’t be able to claim for conditions or illnesses related to your dystonia but can still claim for a wide variety of others.

Critical illness cover will provide you with a tax-free cash lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious illness during the term of your policy. This can be useful for covering monthly bills and expenses if you are unable to work as normal. You could use your critical illness payment to cover things such as:

  • Paying mortgage or rent payments

  • Cost of living for a period of time

  • Adjustments to the home

  • Treatment to help your condition

There are many reasons you could claim on your critical illness with some of the most common being:

How much does dystonia life insurance cost?

There are several factors that will affect how much your life insurance will cost each month. If you are concerned about budget, there are a few things to consider before choosing your policy.

All insurance providers will ask basic questions such as your height, weight and age before deciding on the cost of your cover. Other factors that can affect the policy price include:

  • The insurance provider you choose
  • Your general health and lifestyle
  • The type of policy you need e.g. family life insurance, mortgage life insurance, guaranteed life insurance
  • The length of cover needed (whole of life vs term life insurance)
  • The amount of cover needed (£s)

If your dystonia symptoms are severe or have caused complications, the insurer might also take this into consideration. This makes it even more important to make sure you are talking to the right people.

All insurers will consider medical conditions slightly differently, so speaking to the right one is key if you want to save.

There are many ways you can lower the cost of your policy, with the best way being to compare what different providers are offering. Often, there will be one or two able to offer the cover you need at a lower price.

Other ways you could reduce the cost of your dystonia life insurance include:

  • Reducing the amount of cover (£s)
  • Reducing how long you are covered for (term of cover)
  • Changing the policy type

Dystonia is a neurological condition that is lifelong and causes the muscles to spasm and contract which can be painful for some people. This condition cannot be cured but the symptoms can be controlled with medication.
