YES – you should be able to get life insurance cover in most cases, even with hepatitis B.

If you have chronic hepatitis B and you need life cover, then you will probably be asked to provide medical evidence. This is a normal part of the application process so do not worry. This doesn’t mean that life cover will not be accessible.

If you are asked to provide your GP details then that’s a standard process for an insurer to get your medical information. You have the option to view your medical records before they go to the insurer, however, this can add time on to your application.

You won’t need to do anything in this case because your report will go directly to the insurer and they will pay for it. Your GP report will then be reviewed by a medical underwriter who will assess your application.

Does life insurance pay out for hepatitis B?

YES – life insurance should pay out for people with hepatitis B. Providing you have put cover in place before you become seriously ill or pass away, you should usually qualify for a life insurance pay out.

As hepatitis B will be classed as a pre-existing condition you will need to declare this at the point of taking out cover.

Will critical illness cover pay out for hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B critical illness cover can be available, especially where you have fully recovered. This is something that can be down to the insurer and might be limited to certain conditions, depending on your symptoms and severity.

If you do not already have hepatitis B and develop this, you may be able to claim on a critical illness policy you already have in place.

If hepatitis is a pre-existing condition, you will not be able to claim for this. You will however be able to claim for other unrelated illnesses and this can be extremely beneficial to provide additional financial support.

Critical illness cover can be very useful, allowing you the peace of mind to recover at your own pace – with financial support in place in the meantime.

How does life insurance work with hepatitis B?

When taking out life cover with a pre-existing condition such as hepatitis B, there will be additional factors insurers will consider. As with any policy they will need information regarding your general health and lifestyle but will also ask questions directly related to your hepatitis.

If you’ve had hepatitis B and now fully recovered, then you shouldn’t need a medical or any GP report. In these cases where someone has had Hepatitis B and needs life insurance, it should be a quick and fairly simple process.

You can choose from several different types of life cover which are designed for different things. The best way to choose is to think about what’s most important to you, what you want to cover against, and how much you want to spend.

Hepatitis B term life insurance (family protection) is the most common type of life insurance because of what it covers and how simple it is. You should be able to get a family protection policy with Hepatitis B or if you’ve got chronic hepatitis B, depending on your symptoms.

Most insurers would consider an application for hepatitis B where you are fully recovered, or no longer receiving treatment. If you’ve got chronic hepatitis B then you might find that cover can be available, but your choice of insurers might be smaller.

Hepatitis B decreasing life insurance (mortgage protection) is the same as family life insurance, but cheaper because the cover amount reduces. This is specifically designed to protect a repayment mortgage and will usually be available to you.
