Migraine life insurance

Migraine life insurance can provide you with peace of mind by ensuring that your family is financially protected should anything happen to you.

A migraine is defined as a moderate or severe throbbing headache on one side of your head. It’s a common condition that affects about 1 in 5 women and around 1 in 15 men.

Whilst migraines alone are not usually considered to be life-threatening, there are still some points to consider when it comes to life insurance – for example, whether there is an underlying cause for the migraines and which insurers are the best for migraine life insurance.

Does life insurance pay out for Migraines?

As migraines are not life-threatening, it is highly unlikely that a claim would need to be made as a result of this condition.

However, life insurance policies are designed to be fully comprehensive, so they will include any pre-existing conditions you may have, as long as you’ve fully disclosed those conditions or if the insurer has reviewed your medical records.

Therefore, if you were to pass away from something related to migraines or otherwise, an active life insurance policy would pay out a lump sum to ensure your loved ones are taken care of.

Does critical illness cover pay out for Migraines?

Migraines are not generally considered to be a critical condition, so migraines alone would not trigger a pay-out on critical illness cover.

There are, however, numerous conditions that may be the underlying cause of your migraines, and some of them are serious enough to cause a pay-out.

Each insurer has a list of diagnoses that they class as critical illnesses, and the policies are designed to provide financial support if you were to develop something serious.

A few examples of conditions commonly covered by critical illness cover are:

Some policies even cover up to 150 different illnesses, making for very comprehensive protection. It’s therefore still worth considering how extremely beneficial critical illness cover might be, even if you already have an existing condition like migraines.

Some of the main uses for critical illness cover are:

  • Loss of income
  • Treatment and medications
  • Pay bills and outgoings

Will income protection pay out for Migraines?

Yes – it’s understandable that migraines may cause someone to take time off work. Usually, if your GP signs you off work for 4 or more weeks, an income protection policy will pay out.

Whilst you are unable to work (whether it be sickness or injury), this type of policy will pay you a benefit each month until you are fit to return to work. Most income protection policies can cover you for up to 12 or 24 months.

Income protection is based on your health at the time you take out the cover. Depending on the specific details of your migraines (for example, what the cause is and how frequently you have them) it is possible for exclusions to be applied to the cover. It’s best to speak to an expert as they will know the best insurer to go with.

Income protection helps to pay for:

  • Mortgage and rent payments
  • Bills and outgoings
  • School fees
  • Medical treatment

Can I get life insurance with Migraines?

Yes – even if you already have migraines, life insurance is available. The key is knowing the right provider to go with, as all insurance companies treat conditions slightly differently.

Provided that your condition has been fully investigated and is not a result of something life-threatening, and you are not on any significant medication, the process for obtaining life cover could be simple.

It’s important to get the best cover at a price that suits your budget, so a life insurance expert can give you more information and take away the confusion and hassle.

Will I need a medical to get Migraine life insurance?

It’s entirely possible to avoid the need for a medical when applying for migraine life insurance, and this will depend on the details and severity of your condition. Each insurer differs slightly, and they will likely ask you a few key questions so that they fully understand your migraines.

Some of these questions include:

  • When did you start getting migraines?
  • How often do they happen?
  • Are you on any medication?
  • Is there an underlying cause?
  • Do you have any other symptoms or side effects?
  • Does it ever prevent you from working?

Depending on your answers, some insurance companies may be able to offer the cover without having to request further evidence.

On some occasions, such as if there is an underlying condition, the insurer may require additional medical evidence. The two main types of medical evidence requests are:

  • Medical report (from your GP)
  • Nurse screening

Don’t worry – the insurance company will pay for these records/tests so you won’t have to pay any extra for them to be sent out.

Medical conditions linked to Migraines

There are multiple conditions that can be linked to or cause Migraines.

Common questions about Migraines

Here are a few of the most common questions about Migraines from people looking for life insurance quotes.

Will migraines affect life insurance?

In general, the milder cases of migraines will have a minimal impact on life insurance, if any at all, provided there is no underlying condition and you’re not on strong medication. For the more severe cases where there is an underlying condition causing your migraines, the insurers will base the price on the underlying condition rather than the migraines themselves.

Are migraines a pre existing condition?

Like the above question, the answer could be a yes or no depending on the details of your migraines. Normally insurers will consider migraines to be a pre-existing condition but whether this makes a difference to your policy depends on whether there is anything more serious causing your migraines. Again, it will be the underlying cause that makes a difference in these cases.

Do migraines shorten your life?

No – migraines themselves do not shorten your life in cases where there is no harmful underlying cause. Despite the unpleasant experience and side effects, migraines do not damage your brain or other body parts, so if you suffer from migraines that are not caused by a high-risk health condition, your life expectancy will be normal.
