Type 1 neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder which leads to (usually) benign tumors growing along your nerves. This condition mainly affects your nervous system and skin with the severity of symptoms varying from person to person.

Common neurofibromatosis type 1 signs and symptoms include:

  • Birthmarks (light brown patches known as café au lait spots)
  • Neurofibromas (soft tumours or lumps on or under the skin)
  • Groups of freckles in unusual places e.g. armpit or groin

You may also develop further symptoms or complications such as plexiform fibromas (tumours where multiple nerve branches come together). This can be painful and cause numbness, bleeding and bladder or bowel problems.

In serious cases, plexiform fibromas can develop into malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, meaning the tumours have become cancerous.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 vs 2

There is another form of neurofibromatosis known as neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). While this condition also causes tumours to grow on your nerves, the symptoms are different and type 2 is rarer.

NF2 can cause hearing loss, tinnitus and balance problems, due to tumours growing on the auditory nerves that affect balance and hearing. It can also lead to problems with weakness in the arms and legs in some cases.

As both conditions have different symptoms with varying severity, insurers will assess each condition on an individual basis. This is the same as with any medical condition and other factors such as your age can also affect which policy will be the best choice for you.

Will life insurance cover neurofibromatosis type 1?

YES – your life insurance policy will still cover you if you have type 1 neurofibromatosis and have disclosed this when taking out your policy. It should also be straightforward to get a new policy with this condition for most people, depending on severity of symptoms.

If your condition is well managed and your symptoms are mild, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to access life insurance. You could even get it at a standard rate through many great providers.

Does life insurance pay out for neurofibromatosis type 1?

YES – if you have neurofibromatosis type 1 your family should still receive a pay out from your life insurance policy if you were to pass away.

Life insurance is the best way to protect your family from financial difficulties, in the event you were to pass away. It will provide a lump sum that can be used to help cover various expenses such as:

  • Mortgage or rent payments
  • Household bills
  • School fees
  • Funeral costs
  • Debts

The money from your policy pay out can be a much-needed safety net, meaning your family do not need to worry about bills at an already difficult time.

More about LIFE INSURANCE

If you apply for life insurance with a pre-existing medical condition, there can be additional questions alongside the usual ones about general health and lifestyle. This is the same whether this a genetic condition from birth like type 1 neurofibromatosis, or one developed later in life.

When applying for neurofibromatosis type 1 life insurance, you may be asked questions such as:

  • When you were diagnosed
  • How often your tumours develop
  • Have you had scans or treatments? (e.g. tumour removals)
  • If you know how many tumours you currently have
  • How severe your symptoms are and if you have developed complications due to your condition (e.g. high blood pressure or epilepsy0

Can I get neurofibromatosis type 1 life insurance?

YES – there can be brilliant options available for life insurance with neurofibromatosis type 1. If your symptoms are mild, you may be able to receive cover at standard rates through many providers.

If you have developed complications related to your neurofibromatosis like cancerous tumours or epilepsy this can complicate your application. This means it is even more important to speak to an advisor with the right background in life insurance with medical conditions.

Can you get critical illness cover with neurofibromatosis type 1?

YES – type 1 neurofibromatosis shouldn’t prevent you from taking out critical illness cover in most cases, particularly if your symptoms are well managed and not severe. The insurer may however exclude you from claiming for conditions related to your neurofibromatosis.

Critical illness cover will pay out a tax-free cash lump sum to you if you are diagnosed with a serious illness during the policy term. This means it can be a very beneficial insurance policy to have in place, helping to cover lost income or pay for medical expenses.

Common reasons for critical illness claims include:
