What is neurofibromatosis type 2?
Type 2 neurofibromatosis is a genetic medical condition that will cause tumor growth along your nerves and the tumours are generally benign (non cancerous). The benign tumors can also grow in the brain and spinal cord and there can be various tumour types (such as meningioma and ependymoma).
This condition mainly affects hearing and balance, as tumours grow along the auditory nerves responsible for these functions. These tumours are known as acoustic neuromas (or vestibular schwannomas).
Typical neurofibromatosis type 2 symptoms include:
- Issues with balance and walking
- Tinnitus (ringing/buzzing in the ears)
- Increasing levels of hearing loss
Neurofibromatosis type 1 vs type 2
There are two types of neurofibromatosis. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is like type 2 in that it causes tumours to grow on your nerves, but the symptoms are different.
While type 2 mainly affects hearing and balance, type 1 neurofibromatosis mostly affects the skin with birthmarks, clusters of freckles and tumours (neurofibromas). Type 1 neurofibromatosis is also more commonly diagnosed than type 2.
Will life insurance cover neurofibromatosis type 2?
YES – you will still be covered by your existing policy if you are diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2. Although a genetic condition from birth, symptoms may not occur and be diagnosed until teenage years or early adulthood.
It can also still be possible to take out a new neurofibromatosis type 2 life insurance policy, provided you get advice from an expert who knows which providers are best to approach.
If you have well managed symptoms that are not severe, you could even get insurance at a standard rate through many excellent providers.
Does life insurance pay out for neurofibromatosis type 2?
YES – provided you have disclosed this condition when applying, your loved ones should have no issue receiving a pay out from your policy if you were to pass away.
Life insurance is the #1 way to provide your family with financial security, ensuring they will not struggle when you are no longer around. Your cover will pay out a lump sum if you were to pass away which can be used for many things including:
- Mortgage or rent payments
- Household bills
- School fees
- Funeral costs
Having a life insurance policy in place can give you peace of mind, as you know that your family will be well supported during a hard time.
How does life insurance work with neurofibromatosis type 2?
When taking out a life insurance policy with a pre-existing medical condition, insurers may need additional medical information. They will ask the usual health and lifestyle questions as well as asking questions specific to your neurofibromatosis.
If you are applying for neurofibromatosis type 2 life insurance, providers may ask:
- When you were diagnosed
- If you need mobility aids (e.g. walking stick or mobility scooter)
- If you have had any tumours removed
- If you know how many tumours you have currently
- If you have developed any complications or other conditions due to your condition (e.g. meningiomas or peripheral neuropathy)
- Have you had any other forms of treatment to treat complications of the condition (e.g. radiation therapy)
Can I get neurofibromatosis type 2 life insurance?
YES – there are some excellent options for type 2 neurofibromatosis life insurance. If you have more mild symptoms, it can be possible to get life insurance at a standard rate.
You may have developed further medical conditions or complications due to neurofibromatosis type 2, which may have meant you have been declined cover in the past.
Can you get critical illness cover with neurofibromatosis type 2?
YES – in many cases you will be able to take out critical illness cover if you have type 2 neurofibromatosis, especially if your condition is well managed. Insurers may however place an exclusion for claims related to your condition e.g. progressive hearing loss or deafness.
Critical illness cover is a very beneficial policy to have in place, providing you with a tax-free lump sum if you were diagnosed with a serious illness. This can help you to cover any expenses incurred from loss of income if unable to work or to cover medical costs.
Some common conditions that lead to critical illness claims include:
