What is polymyositis?
Polymyositis is a form of myositis and is a rare immune system disorder. This is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks healthy muscle tissues mistakenly leading to muscle inflammation (inflammatory myopathies) and pain. Polymyositis is often diagnosed with a blood test and physical exam and muscle biopsy, intended to rule out other conditions.
This condition affects muscle strength and causes symptoms such as:
- Muscle weakness (can lead to difficulty climbing stairs, lifting objects and more)
- Aching muscles
- Muscle pain
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sitting up or standing after a fall
- Depression or general feelings of unhappiness
Your symptoms may vary in severity and can progress, becoming more severe over time. Complications of polymyositis include respiratory failure and trouble with swallowing (dysphagia).
According to Myositis UK, polymyositis affects roughly twice as many females as males in the UK.
Will life insurance cover polymyositis?
YES – life insurance will cover you if you are diagnosed with polymyositis during your policy. There should also be a range of policies that can cover you if you already have polymyositis.
The key thing to remember is you must tell your insurance provider if you have polymyositis or another medical condition when you apply. Insurers want a full overview of your health before approving your policy. If you don’t disclose relevant medical information, you risk your cover being made invalid later.
Does life insurance pay out for polymyositis?
YES – if you were to die during your policy term, your life insurance policy will pay out a cash lump sum to your loved ones.
Standard life insurance won’t exclude medical conditions. If you have been honest about your health when you applied, your loved ones should have no issues receiving a pay out from your policy.
How does polymyositis life insurance work?
When applying for life insurance with medical conditions there are a few things you will need to keep in mind. On an life insurance application you will be asked questions about your general health and lifestyle. This includes questions about your age, weight, smoker status and more.
If you are applying for life insurance with polymyositis, you could also be asked some of the following questions:
- How long have you had polymyositis? When were you diagnosed?
- Have you been prescribed medication to treat your symptoms?
- Which muscles are affected by polymyositis?
In many cases, insurers could also request a GP report for further medical information. This is standard practice with life insurance applications and not something to be overly concerned about.
Can I get life insurance with polymyositis?

Symptoms of polymyositis can vary in severity over time. It is a good idea to apply when your health is good if you can, as this can help you access better rates.
Can I get critical illness cover with polymyositis?
YES – you should be able to get critical illness cover with polymyositis in most cases. If your symptoms are well managed, this can further increase your chances.
It is possible that the insurer will want to see further medical evidence when processing your critical illness cover application. This will usually be in the form of a GP report. The insurer will be able to access this on your behalf, so don’t worry about having to find this information yourself.
