PTSD Life insurance

Many people in the UK suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or ‘PTSD’ and their lives can be severely impacted by this condition. A person can develop PTSD after a traumatic event, and if affected you may experience life changing symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia and more.

Having a condition like PTSD can feel very isolating and you may be worried it will cause insurers to prevent you from getting the life cover you need. We are extremely proud to be top rated in the UK for mental health life insurance and can help you find the right insurer to look after your family’s future.

Our friendly advisors work hard to make sure people in the UK can get the cover they need to protect their homes and families, regardless of any physical or mental health issues. We understand it can be difficult to talk about your mental health with someone you have never met and strive to make this process as easy and comfortable for you as possible.

YES – your life insurance policy should still cover you if you are diagnosed with PTSD during your policy term. If you had PTSD when applying, as long as you disclosed this on your initial application you should be covered.

Mental health conditions are becoming more and more widely spoken about, now being judged more fairly and similarly to physical health issues. This means insurers will likely have received thousands of applications from people with PTSD or other mental health conditions.

Insurers now will be much better when it comes to PTSD life insurance, though of course some will be better than others for providing the cover you need. If you need more advice about which providers work best for PTSD, you can consult one of our life insurance experts.

Does life insurance pay out for PTSD?

YES – if you have PTSD and were to pass away, your policy should pay out a tax-free cash lump sum to your loved ones or specified beneficiaries.

This money can be used for any reason and can provide much needed support for your family at a hard time. A life insurance pay out can be used to help pay for:

  • Funeral expenses
  • Mortgage or rent payments
  • School fees
  • Repayment of debts
  • And more…

How does PTSD life insurance work?

Applications for life insurance with any pre-existing medical condition will follow a similar process, whether a physical or mental health condition.

The insurance provider will ask general questions relating to your health and lifestyle including your age, height and weight, smoker status etc. These questions and more will be asked for all life insurance applications, as this helps insurance providers get an idea of your overall health.

If you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, you may also be asked questions specific to this condition including:

  • When you were diagnosed with PTSD
  • If you are currently experiencing symptoms of PTSD
  • The symptoms you experience and how severe they are
  • Whether you are on any treatment for PTSD from a mental health professional e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), reprocessing emdr (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing)
  • If you take any medications to help your symptoms e.g. anti-depressants such as sertraline or paroxetine
  • If you have ever needed time off work due to PTSD symptoms
  • If you have ever experienced self-harm, suicidal thoughts or attempts due to PTSD

It is important to be prepared to answer these questions and answer as honestly as you can. We know it isn’t easy to talk about your mental health (particularly with a stranger) and will do our best to support you through your application as much as possible.

Our team have years of expertise in this area and understand how vital it is to be sympathetic and understanding of our customer’s needs and history, particularly if the questions asked may be uncomfortable or difficult to answer.

YES – it is definitely possible to get life insurance if you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Certain providers may be better though when it comes to offering life insurance to people with mental health conditions, so it can be worth consulting an expert.

Mental health charities have worked hard over the last 20 years to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health conditions like PTSD. If your symptoms are more mild or well managed, you may even be able to get life cover now at a standard rate.

Can I get critical illness cover with PTSD?

YES – critical illness cover may be available, provided you speak to the right insurer. If your symptoms are mild or you were diagnosed many years ago, it can be more straightforward to get cover, though there may still be exclusions included in your policy.

An exclusion simply means the insurer could choose to not pay out for medical conditions directly related to your PTSD. If this is the case, these conditions will be stated in your policy documents so be sure to read these carefully.

Critical illness cover can be a very useful policy to have in place, either alongside life insurance or as a standalone policy. This policy will provide you with a tax-free cash lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition during the policy term.

Common reasons for critical illness cover claims include:

How much does PTSD life insurance cost?

The cost of any life insurance policy will vary depending on many factors including:

If you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, insurers will consider this when determining the cost of your cover. You may be surprised to find that often cover will be very reasonably priced, even with a mental health condition like PTSD.

If you have multiple medical conditions, this can complicate things slightly without the help and support of an experienced advisor.

As the UK’s #1 experts in pre-existing conditions life insurance, this is a situation we see very often. Our team are highly trained and experienced, knowing exactly which providers will be best to approach for applicants with multiple conditions.

We never want to waste your time with multiple unsuccessful applications, as we can appreciate how frustrating this can be. We will only ever submit applications to the provider best suited to your needs and have a carefully chosen panel of excellent insurance partners to choose from.

If you want to save on your PTSD life insurance policy, the best way to do this will always be by making sure you receive the right advice from someone you can trust.

Our life insurance experts know which providers will offer the best cover for mental health conditions at a fair price. Getting life cover to protect our loved ones is important and an option that should be available to anyone – without having to pay ridiculous prices each month.
