Diabetes Week 2024

Diabetes Week happens in June every year, and this week is used to raise awareness of what it’s like to live with diabetes in the UK. This year, Diabetes UK is using Diabetes Week as an opportunity to raise awareness of all the health checks that diabetics need to have.

People living with diabetes need to monitor their symptoms (e.g. blood sugar readings) carefully to stay as fit and healthy as possible. It’s also very important to be aware of the symptoms of diabetes and to visit your doctor if you are concerned that you might be diabetic.

In this article, our insurance experts will explain more about the aim of Diabetes Week 2024, how to support people living with diabetes, and how diabetes can affect different types of insurance policies.

60-Second Summary – Diabetes Week 2024

This year, Diabetes Week takes place from June 10 to June 16, 2024, and is the UK’s main event for raising awareness about living with diabetes. For their 2024 awareness week, Diabetes UK wants to raise awareness of the importance of regular health checks for diabetics.

  • You can support Diabetes Week by sharing information about diabetes, sharing personal stories about living with the condition, or by fundraising for a chosen diabetes charity.
  • It’s always a good idea to be aware of the symptoms of diabetes, so that you can catch the condition early to avoid worsening symptoms or complications.
  • You can visit our Diabetes Insurance Hub to find out more about how having diabetes can affect policies like life insurance or health insurance.
  • Diabetes UK is the UK’s main diabetes support charity, and they provide a wide range of free resources and information to support people living with diabetes.

Diabetes Week is the main awareness week for people living with diabetes in the UK. While many UK charities and healthcare organisations promote Diabetes Week, this awareness week was set up by the UK’s leading diabetes charity, Diabetes UK.

Even though diabetes week is a big event for Diabetes UK, they also work tirelessly to raise awareness and support for people living with diabetes throughout the year. This year, Diabetes UK wants to raise more awareness of how to monitor diabetes symptoms through health checks such as checking your blood sugar levels (Hba1c readings).

They have produced a lot of helpful guidance on this topic over the years, including this video from several years ago.

When is Diabetes Week in the UK?

Diabetes Week 2024 is taking place between Monday the 10th of June and Sunday the 16th of June. Though diabetes week is always in June, the exact dates can vary from year to year.

Diabetes UK will usually publish the date for diabetes week in advance on their website, and there are various ways to show your support during Diabetes Week including:

  • Share resources about diabetes symptoms and care on social media or in person with friends, family, and co-workers.
  • Raise money for Diabetes UK or another diabetes charity of your choice.
  • Share your own story if you have type 1, type 2 or another form of diabetes.
  • Show your support for friends and family members who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Diabetes affects millions of people around the world, and being aware of the symptoms of diabetes can help you to catch the condition early. This helps to reduce the risk of complications (e.g. neuropathy, retinopathy) which can be caused by badly managed blood sugar levels (Hba1c).

Life and health insurance companies will always want to know about your diabetes diagnosis and how this affects your general health. Policies like life insurance and critical illness insurance can be more expensive for diabetics, but there are ways to lower the cost of your cover.

  1. Shop around and compare quotes from several insurance companies.
  2. Apply when your health is good (e.g. Hba1c levels are well managed).
  3. Speak to a specialist insurance company if your diabetes is poorly controlled or you have multiple medical conditions.

Several insurance companies now offer specialised policies for people with diabetes, and a specialist insurer can help if you have severe symptoms or complications. We’re proud to be experts in diabetes life insurance, and you can visit our Diabetes Insurance Hub for more information and resources.

The simplest way to find the best quotes for diabetes life insurance or diabetes health insurance is to speak to an experienced insurance specialist.

Our team have over 25 years of expertise and can provide free and impartial advice about any new or existing insurance policies. To speak to our experts, call 0800 009 6559 or CLICK HERE.

Is it worth paying for life insurance?

Yes, if you’ve got children or financial dependents then you should have life insurance to protect them if you die. Martin Lewis and the Financial Conduct Authority recommend that you take out life insurance to protect your family and your home. Generally, life insurance premiums start from as little as £5 per month and will be cheaper for younger adults.

Common myths about life insurance:

  • Life insurance won’t pay out (pays out 98% of claims)
  • People with medical conditions can’t have life insurance
  • Life insurance is expensive
  • Savings can be just as effective as life insurance

What does life insurance cover you for?

Life insurance is a monthly renewable ‘term insurance’ contract that pays out a cash lump sum or regular payments on death to your family or beneficiaries. Policies are most commonly used for family protection or mortgage protection for your loved ones if you die and your household income reduces, plus the additional issues of losing a parent or carer.

Traditional life insurance will not exclude any pre-existing medical conditions and will cover suicide after 12 or 24 months. You can also use life insurance for business protection purposes as well as tax-efficient business life insurance for directors or key people.

What are the disadvantages of life insurance?

The biggest and most common problem that consumers have with life insurance is the cost and the monthly premiums. This is the top reason for policy cancellations and why more people don’t take out life insurance to protect their family.

Another key disadvantage with life insurance is that it holds no investment value, nor can you cash it in. Life insurance works like any other traditional general insurance policy (e.g. car insurance, house insurance, pet insurance etc.), you pay a monthly premium and it will pay out in the event of a claim. Some people decide to use savings instead of taking out life insurance but you need to make sure that you have sufficient savings to cover the costs of death for your family.

Why do I need life insurance?

The fact is that nobody actually ‘needs’ life insurance, but it is strongly recommended that families and couples have cover to protect their loved ones in the event of death. Martin Lewis recommends life insurance and says “this is something that every parent, partner, or person with any other type of dependent needs to consider”.

Life insurance financially protects your loved ones if you die and pays out a cash lump sum to repay your mortgage, pay for school fees, replace lost income, and pay for regular outgoings. Mortgage life insurance is not linked to your mortgage debt so you can use it to pay off some or all of your mortgage.
