60-Second Summary – Best Travel Insurance UK 2024 Guide

Our top travel insurance experts are answering your main questions about the best travel insurance in the UK and what options might work well for different types of UK travellers.

Every travel insurance customer will be different, and certain insurance companies will work better for some people than others. It can be helpful to apply through a travel insurance comparison website, as this allows you to quickly and easily compare the best policies for your holiday.

  • Travel insurance is designed to protect you against any potential loss of money related to your holiday. This includes cover for things like flight cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost belongings.
  • The main options for travel insurance are single trip and annual multi-trip policies. You can also buy couples and family policies, or policies that offer specialised coverage for activities like cruises or winter sports.
  • Based on our most recent research, Coverwise is currently the best budget travel insurance option in the UK. Their prices start from less than £10 for single trips, with affordable policies available up until age 75.
  • Ageas and Coverwise are the travel insurance companies that are most highly rated by their customers. Both companies are rated ‘Excellent’ with a score 4.7 out of 5.0 Stars on independent review site Trustpilot.
  • The companies with the best range of standard policy features are Coverwise, Ageas and Virgin Money. They all offer high levels of protection within their standard travel insurance policies.
  • If you have medical conditions or are over 50, applying via a specialist travel insurance broker will be the easiest way to get affordable and suitable cover.

There isn’t one overall ‘best’ travel insurance company or policy, as everyone will need something different from their travel insurance cover. In this guide, our insurance experts will be looking at the top travel insurance companies in the UK and explain which companies work best in certain situations.

The travel insurance policy and company that will be best for you will depend on things like:

  • The type of travel insurance that you need (single trip or annual cover)
  • Where you are going on holiday (trip destination)
  • Your age
  • Your medical history
  • How much you want to spend (budget)
  • If you want to add on any extra benefits for a higher level of cover (e.g. gadget cover to protect your mobile phone or laptop)

It is a common opinion that travel insurance is a luxury expense or an extra which isn’t needed, and this simply isn’t true. Travel insurance is the best and easiest way to provide yourself with financial protection, in case something goes wrong before or during your holiday.

A recent article from GoCompare.com stated that 1 in 4 British holidaymakers won’t buy travel insurance because they think they don’t need it. While travel insurance isn’t something that must be bought to go on holiday, it offers peace of mind that you won’t be left with expensive bills if anything unexpected happens after you book your trip.

The first thing to think about when choosing a travel insurance company is whether the policies that they sell offer the right benefits and level of cover for you. It may be tempting to simply choose the cheapest option, especially if you only need cover for a very short trip (e.g. a weekend or city break).

While price is important, it can be worth paying slightly more to make sure that you have the right amount of cover.

The main things to consider when choosing a travel insurance company are:

  • Cost of policy (is it within your budget?)
  • Policy features and benefits
  • Amount of excess to pay when you claim
  • Amount of cover for medical emergencies
  • Customer experience (independent reviews on sites like Trustpilot)
  • Awards and ratings (e.g. Defaqto score)

Looking at each of these areas will help you to figure out if the policy that you’re considering offers the best protection and value for money. Checking independent customer reviews can reveal if there are any common issues with the insurance company (e.g. lengthy claims process).

It’s very possible to buy travel insurance that is both reasonably priced and offers the right level of cover for you. If you are struggling to find the right policy, a travel insurance broker will be able to quickly compare your best options for you.

Our insurance experts have compared quotes from 8 top UK travel insurance companies, to see which ones offer the best budget travel insurance policies.

Our top insurance experts recently published research which showed that the average cost of travel insurance in the UK is £12.60 for a single trip policy and £21.58 for annual travel cover.

These won’t be the prices that everyone pays, but they can give you a rough idea of how much your policy might cost. For a full explanation of travel insurance prices, see our guide Average Cost of Travel Insurance UK.

How to get cheap travel insurance

If you want to save money on your next travel insurance policy, there are simple steps which can make a big difference to the price that you pay.

Our main tips for cheaper travel insurance are:

  • Compare quotes from multiple companies – It is always best to check the prices that are being offered by multiple companies to see who has the lowest prices.
  • Pay more excess (if this is affordable) – Agreeing to pay a higher excess when you claim can make policy premiums lower, but you should only agree to pay this if you can afford it.
  • Don’t add unnecessary benefits – It can be tempting to add on extra cover for gadgets for example, but only do this if you think you really need this.
  • Apply through a travel insurance specialist – A specialist travel insurance expert will be the best option to find the lowest prices, especially if you are over 50 or have health conditions.

Based on the customer reviews that have been left for each travel insurance company, Ageas and Coverwise are rated as the best by their customers. They each have a customer review score of 4.7 out of 5.0 Stars on Trustpilot, though Ageas has just over 15,000 reviews and Coverwise has more than 83,000 reviews.

Post Office and Virgin Money are ranked lowest in terms of customer feedback, both scoring 1.5 out of 5.0 Stars. However, it’s crucial to keep in mind that these companies offer a range of products and services, so some reviews may not be about travel insurance.

Travel Insurance provider reviews

Our travel insurance experts have looked at the lowest cost policies from each travel insurance company to work out which one provides the very best core cover.

Standard excess amount£125 or £200
Cancellation£1,000
Personal accident cover£10,000
Personal liability£10,000,000

If Coverwise doesn’t feel right for you, both Ageas and Virgin Money offer a high level of core cover. They also work better than Coverwise in certain situations (e.g. both pay out more for holiday cancellation).

Ageas travel insurance policy features

Cover for emergency medical expenses£10,000,000

Cancellation£3,000
Personal belongings£1,250

What does Martin Lewis say about travel insurance?

Martin Lewis provides lots of guidance for holidaymakers who are searching for the best deals on their travel insurance. One of the biggest recommendations from Martin Lewis travel insurance advice is ‘ASAB’ (As Soon As you Book), which basically translates to suggesting that you should buy your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

In an interview on This Morning talking to Martin Lewis about travel insurance, he claims that he is constantly being asked by consumers, “what can I do if I’ve been diagnosed with a medical problem and I can’t go on holiday because my travel company won’t give me a refund?”. According to Martin Lewis travel insurance recommendations, 50% of the value of your travel insurance cover is before you are due to travel.

Top reasons for holiday cancellations before travelling:

  • Sickness or illness
  • Accidents causing an injury
  • Emergency at home
  • Family emergency
  • Work commitments

Is it worth taking out travel insurance?

Almost all financial experts such as Martin Lewis and citizensadvice.org.uk, strongly recommend that you take out a travel insurance policy and that you do it quickly. The financial and emotional impact of not having travel insurance while overseas can be catastrophic if you require medical treatment or if you are victim of a crime.

The cost of travel insurance is generally affordable for most holidaymakers and you should factor this in to the cost of your holiday. Risking not having travel insurance and then having a medical emergency when you are overseas, especially in certain destinations, can cost you thousands.

What does travel insurance cover?

Most travel insurance policies will provide the same core elements such as medical emergencies, repatriation, legal expenses, loss, theft or damage to personal belongings, and cancellation or curtailment of your trip. The types and levels of cover can vary dramatically from one policy to another so you should make sure that you’re getting the cover that you want and that you need.

Also, some travel insurance policies won’t cover you for certain destinations, activities or types of holidays, such as:

  • Cruise holidays
  • Winter sports
  • Worldwide travel
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Note: Travel insurance will generally exclude any accident or injury that has happened whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

What is classed as a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance?

According to one of the UK’s top travel insurance providers, Staysure clearly states that ‘you must declare ALL pre-existing medical conditions when your take out a travel insurance policy’. Witholding any information about your health or medical history could expose you to the risks of rendering your cover invalid and therefore class any claims as ‘null and void’.

Any of the following pre-existing conditions must always be disclosed on your travel insurance application:

  • Cardiovascular conditions (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease etc.)
  • Cancer(s)
  • Any Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

You should also let your travel insurance provider know about any of the following medical investigations, tests or treatments in the past two years:

  • Symptoms (whether or not you have consulted a doctor)
  • Medication or treatments
  • Scans or investigations
  • Medical appointments and check-ups
  • Surgery
