What is Zurich Accelerate?

Zurich Life Insurance has introduced a new benefit, which offers extra support for your family’s health and it’s available from 2024 onwards. The ‘Zurich Accelerate’ benefit can now be added to both new and existing Zurich life, critical illness, and income protection insurance policies.

Zurich Accelerate gives you access to 6 specialist health services, including overseas medical cover, private diagnostic tests, and customised cancer support and treatment options. Accelerate has been designed specifically to provide faster investigations, diagnosis, and treatment in 3 key areas (cancer, heart conditions, and neurological conditions).

In this guide, our team of insurance experts explains exactly what the new ‘Accelerate’ benefit does and how it can help support Zurich customers and their families. We will cover how this benefit works, all the available support services, and all the pros and cons of adding this to your policy.

60-Second Summary – What is Zurich Accelerate? Complete Guide 2024

Zurich’s innovative new ‘Accelerate’ benefit offers additional health support for serious health issues that could have a major impact on you and your family. It is intended to be used as a complementary service alongside NHS care, and as an alternative route to access the medical support that you need.

The bullet points below provide a brief explanation of each of the 6 health support services that are available for Zurich Accelerate customers.

  • Virtual Consultant: An online medical advice service where a qualified professional can assess symptoms of potential cancer, heart conditions, and neurological conditions.
  • Private Diagnostics Plus: This provides fast access to diagnostic tests and investigations, including those not currently available on the NHS.
  • Second Medical Opinion: You can receive a second opinion from a qualified medical professional to confirm your diagnosis and suggest alternative treatments.
  • Precision Cancer Medicine: This provides suggestions for targeted cancer treatments, based on the genetic makeup of the cancer itself.
  • Cancer Clinical Trial Support: A Zurich expert will look at your case to assess your best options for clinical trials and Zurich will cover associated costs.
  • Global Treatment Plus: This covers the cost of overseas medical treatments including heart surgery, neurosurgery, and organ donation (live donor only).

Zurich Accelerate is a useful benefit that can be added to Zurich life insurance, critical illness, and income protection policies. By adding Zurich Accelerate to your policy, you can access UK and overseas health support for serious health issues like cancer, heart, and neurological conditions.

Zurich Accelerate aims to help support you and your family with serious health issues that could happen in the future. It is made up of 6 key services that can be used by anyone with the Zurich Accelerate benefit which are:

Virtual Consultant

The Virtual Consultant service quickly connects you with a qualified UK consultant, who can provide medical advice about symptoms that indicate cancer or a heart or neurological condition. This service can be used by Zurich members 3 times per year (or 4 times if you have been recommended to have a biopsy).

You are given the choice of which consultant you will see, as well as a dedicated case manager who will ensure that you get all the support that you need.

Note: This service will also cover any costs for accessing your previous medical records from your GP or specialist. You can’t request advice for symptoms from before having Zurich Accelerate until you have had the benefit for at least 12 months.

Private Diagnostics Plus

If you are experiencing worrying symptoms, you can book an appointment at an appropriate diagnostics clinic and avoid long NHS waiting lists. It also allows you to access diagnostic tests that aren’t currently available through the NHS for a faster diagnosis.

You may be recommended to use the Private Diagnostics Plus service to establish the cause of your symptoms after using the Virtual Consultant service to get medical advice.

Second Medical Opinion

If you have already received a diagnosis, you can use the Second Medical Opinion service to confirm that your diagnosis is correct. A qualified consultant will review any previous medical evidence (e.g. CT scans, MRI scans) and may suggest a different diagnosis or course of treatment.

This service is only available once per diagnosis and allows you to get medical opinions from specialists within the UK and overseas (where appropriate).

Precision Cancer Medicine

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may be able to use the Precision Cancer Medicine service for extra support with your treatment. This service will look at the genetic makeup of any tumours to work out the best possible treatment plan for you.

You can request testing and counselling for your children or siblings, if the cancer is found to be hereditary and could also affect them in the future.

Note: To use this service your cancer needs to be diagnosed at stage 3 or stage 4 and not be responding to your initial course of treatment. You can also use this benefit if the origin of your cancer is unknown or it is a rare form of cancer.

Cancer Clinical Trial Support

The Cancer Clinical Trial Support service has been designed to help Zurich members access clinical trials for experimental cancer treatments. Zurich will even cover the cost of your travel/accommodation and provides a ‘daily allowance’ of funds for you and anyone you have travelled with.

Accessing clinical trials for cancer can be a complicated process, which includes both finding the right trials and applying for them. Zurich’s case managers will assess your diagnosis to find the most appropriate options for you.

Global Treatment Plus

Global Treatment Plus funds overseas medical treatments to ensure that you can access any treatment that you could possibly need for your condition. The costs of your travel and accommodation will be covered, and you and your travel companions will receive a ‘daily allowance’ of funds.

As well as covering your initial treatment, this service will cover any follow-up care or ongoing costs for medication. This benefit covers the following treatments that you may need to receive overseas:

  • Cancer treatment
  • Heart surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Bone marrow transplants
  • Organ transplants (from a live donor only)

Note: While Zurich does cover a range of costs associated with your overseas care, it can still be worthwhile to have travel insurance for the maximum level of protection.

Zurich Accelerate has been designed as a new benefit that can be added to your Zurich Insurance policy for an additional cost. You don’t have to add this benefit to your cover, but it can offer some peace of mind that you will get extra health support when you need it.

Zurich Accelerate isn’t just for new Zurich customers, as it can be added to existing Zurich Insurance policies. However, it is only available for customers who have one of the following policies:

This benefit can also offer cover for your children (up to age 22) to protect your whole family. It will only cover your children if they have not already had symptoms of or received a diagnosis for the key conditions covered by Accelerate. This includes if one or both parents have been told that their child has an increased risk of developing these conditions.

Note: It is important to note that while this benefit is useful, it is intended to work alongside NHS and private health services and isn’t a replacement for them.

Is it worth paying for life insurance?

Yes, if you’ve got children or financial dependents then you should have life insurance to protect them if you die. Martin Lewis and the Financial Conduct Authority recommend that you take out life insurance to protect your family and your home. Generally, life insurance premiums start from as little as £5 per month and will be cheaper for younger adults.

Common myths about life insurance:

  • Life insurance won’t pay out (pays out 98% of claims)
  • People with medical conditions can’t have life insurance
  • Life insurance is expensive
  • Savings can be just as effective as life insurance

What does life insurance cover you for?

Life insurance is a monthly renewable ‘term insurance’ contract that pays out a cash lump sum or regular payments on death to your family or beneficiaries. Policies are most commonly used for family protection or mortgage protection for your loved ones if you die and your household income reduces, plus the additional issues of losing a parent or carer.

Traditional life insurance will not exclude any pre-existing medical conditions and will cover suicide after 12 or 24 months. You can also use life insurance for business protection purposes as well as tax-efficient business life insurance for directors or key people.

What are the disadvantages of life insurance?

The biggest and most common problem that consumers have with life insurance is the cost and the monthly premiums. This is the top reason for policy cancellations and why more people don’t take out life insurance to protect their family.

Another key disadvantage with life insurance is that it holds no investment value, nor can you cash it in. Life insurance works like any other traditional general insurance policy (e.g. car insurance, house insurance, pet insurance etc.), you pay a monthly premium and it will pay out in the event of a claim. Some people decide to use savings instead of taking out life insurance but you need to make sure that you have sufficient savings to cover the costs of death for your family.

Why do I need life insurance?

The fact is that nobody actually ‘needs’ life insurance, but it is strongly recommended that families and couples have cover to protect their loved ones in the event of death. Martin Lewis recommends life insurance and says “this is something that every parent, partner, or person with any other type of dependent needs to consider”.

Life insurance financially protects your loved ones if you die and pays out a cash lump sum to repay your mortgage, pay for school fees, replace lost income, and pay for regular outgoings. Mortgage life insurance is not linked to your mortgage debt so you can use it to pay off some or all of your mortgage.
