More about LIFE INSURANCE

Is life insurance more expensive for builders?

Generally, the cost of life cover is the same for a builder as it is for anyone in a less dangerous occupation. You should be able to get the cover you need instantly and without having to pay a higher premium.

Some of the main things that can affect your premiums as a builder:

  • Do you work at heights above 40 feet?
  • What equipment do you use?
  • Is your job dangerous?
  • Do you work with hazardous materials?

These things won’t necessarily come up on your life insurance application and don’t generally affect your premiums.

Will life insurance payout if I die doing my job (construction)?

YES – your family will receive a payout if you die as a result of something happening doing your job. Life insurance does not exclude occupational risks such as accidents at work.

There are some types of life cover that may come with exclusions but these are far less common and designed for specific reasons. Generally, you’ll be able to see this on your policy documents or if you check with your adviser.

You must always disclose any facts about your health, occupation, and lifestyle when completing your application. This is to make sure that any claim in the future is valid and paid.

Your monthly premiums can vary from one provider to another but also there are lots of options to make this cover affordable.

You’ll need to understand what you want to cover in terms of your monthly outgoings so you know what you need. You’ll also need to consider whether you could survive for a period of time if you have savings for example.

Some of the things to consider:

  • What are your monthly outgoings for essentials?
  • Does your partner contribute to the bills?
  • Do you have any savings?
  • Can you pause some outgoings?

This can help to reduce your premiums by making sure that you only pay for the cover that you need. There is usually a limit to how much cover you can have which is roughly 60-80% of your Gross Pay.
