Life insurance for police officers

The need for life insurance is self-explanatory for many members of the police force. It ensures that your family would receive a fixed lump sum payment to help them through if the worst were to happen to you. The good news is that police life insurance is available from a wide range of insurers, both specialist and general. The key is, therefore, to find the best cover at the fairest price.

According to Statista, there were around 160,000 police officers in the UK and this figure is likely to increase year on year. In terms of the general UK population, only about 30% of people have life cover, which leaves a staggering 70% of people whose families would not receive financial protection from life insurance if they passed away.

YES – life insurance should be readily available to most members of the police service depending on other factors such as age and general health. Finding the best life insurance for police officers comes down to understanding the products available and what suits your needs. Our insurance experts can search the whole market and help find what you’re looking for.

It is common for members of the police officers to be given death in service benefit by their employer, which normally pays out a multiple of their salary if they were to pass away on the job.

The fact of the matter is, however, that this type of death benefit offers minimal financial support compared to other types of life insurance, especially if you have a family and/or a mortgage. You also do not have any control over the cover and have no choice but to take whatever the force offers.

Is critical illness cover available for police officers?

YES – much like other types of cover previously mentioned, critical illness cover is available from a variety of insurance companies. Each of these insurers differs slightly when it comes to critical illness cover for police officers so it’s important to understand what’s covered and what is excluded as not all policies are the same.

Critical illness cover is designed to pay a lump sum to you if you get diagnosed with a serious health condition, most commonly including:

This lump sum payout can help to cover both day-to-day expenditure as well as any additional costs incurred by your condition, such as:

  • Bills and mortgage or rent
  • Medical treatment and medication
  • Travel costs
  • Loss of income

Can police officers get income protection?

YES – income protection insurance is available to police officers from select insurers. This type of policy will usually pay out a monthly benefit if your GP signs you off work for a period of 4 or more weeks.

The monthly payout for income protection is calculated based on a percentage of your gross income and can generally cover police officers for 12 months or 24 months while you recover. This can help to pay for:

  • Mortgage or rent payments
  • Bills and other outgoings
  • School fees
  • Medical treatment

Just like other types of insurance cover, income protection policies are based on your personal health at the time you take out the policy. It will, therefore, take into account any pre-existing medical conditions, so it’s important to know what might get excluded in these instances. See our list of medical conditions for more information.

How much does life insurance for police officers cost?

The cost of police service life insurance is less dependent on the occupation and more dependent on other factors such as your personal wellbeing, age, and the level of cover you’re looking for.

As police life insurance is available from a wide range of insurers, the market is quite competitive and it’s possible to shop around for the best cover to suit your needs. Whether you’re looking for life insurance on its own or would like to explore additional cover, tailoring the policy to suit you is equally important.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition then this will come into the underwriting process and, depending on what it is, the insurance company may request a report from your GP (which they will pay for).

Similarly, the length of the policy (term) and the amount of cover you require (sum assured) will affect your monthly premiums. Our team of life insurance experts can explain exactly how this works and offer advice on the best options.
