The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a charity which grants trusts to other smaller charities to help with their brilliant work in fighting breast cancer and supporting breast cancer patients and their families.

The ‘Pink Ribbon’ is an iconic symbol of many breast cancer charities, worn to raise awareness of breast cancer and show support for breast cancer patients and survivors.

According to the Pink Ribbon Foundation, each year there are:

55,000

Breast cancer cases diagnosed

If you have breast cancer, are in remission or have a family history, you may be worried about how this would affect your ability to get life insurance.

Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of chatting with thousands of customers, and quite a few of them have faced cancer at some point in their lives.

Many of these wonderful people have been interested in life insurance, but they’re not quite sure where to start or what options are out there for them.

Here are the answers to some of the UK’s most frequently asked questions about breast cancer and life insurance, plus a link to our full breast cancer life insurance guide.

Getting insurance before breast cancer

We’re proud to be able to help people at all stages of their breast cancer journey with the best insurance advice and resources. If your friend, family member or co-worker has breast cancer, it may get you thinking about your own situation and what would happen to you if you developed breast cancer.

With policies like life insurance or health insurance, the best thing is to have cover before anything happens to you – if this is possible. That way you are fully protected and have peace of mind that you and your loved ones will have the right financial support in place at a difficult time. Here is a quick explanation about how each type of policy can help to support you if you develop breast cancer in the future.

A happy family

Life insurance

Life insurance is the #1 way to protect your family financially if anything were to happen to you. It’s not a fun situation to think about but it is very important to consider what might happen. This is especially true if you have children or other dependents who rely on you for financial support.

If you were to develop breast cancer which led to you passing away, a life insurance policy would pay out a cash lump sum to your family (or other specified beneficiaries e.g. a close friend).

This money can help to cover key expenses like funeral costs or mortgage repayments and relieve some of the financial pressure at an already difficult time.

Critical illness insurance

Critical illness insurance (also known as critical illness cover) is a very useful policy which isn’t as widely known about as life insurance. A critical illness insurance policy will pay out a cash lump sum (can be a very high amount e.g. £50,000) if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition.

While the specific conditions that are covered can vary from insurer to insurer, every critical illness insurance policy will cover cancer as standard.

If you know you have a strong family history of breast cancer, it can be reassuring to have this protection in place to support you. The pay out from a critical illness insurance policy can help cover the cost of things like travel to and from hospitals/specialists, private medical care and adjustments to your home if needed.

You could even choose to use the money to treat your loved ones to a nice holiday and make some brilliant memories for them, as there are no set rules as to how the money is used.

Income protection insurance

Income protection insurance is another useful policy which pays out a regular monthly income if you need to be signed off work by your doctor or GP. This works to replace up to 60% of your typical monthly income.

This can be extremely helpful in paying for important bills, if cancer treatment means that you need an extended time off work to recover. Most policies will pay out for a minimum of 12 or 24 months, and some long term policies can even pay out for years at a time if needed.

Another bonus is that you can claim multiple times on the same income protection insurance policy. If you are well enough to return to work and then find yourself needing time off again, you would simply get back in touch with your insurer to start a new claim.

You would need to have this policy in place before being signed off work though, so it’s best to buy it sooner rather than later to be covered.

Health insurance

The NHS has been struggling to meet patient demands in recent years which has made private health insurance an attractive alternative for thousands of people across the UK.

The possibility of being diagnosed with cancer is a huge worry for many people and often the main perk of private health insurance will be the enhanced level of cancer care that is available. Private health insurance policies can provide benefits like:

  • Faster diagnosis
  • 24/7 online GP services and advice lines
  • Dedicated cancer support teams
  • Options for treatment in the comfort of your own home (certain insurers)
  • Access cancer drugs and treatments not yet available on the NHS
  • Cover for private cancer treatment and diagnosis

The policies are also generally flexible so you can add or remove benefits to suit how much you can afford to pay. Some insurers will also give options such as fast diagnosis and then NHS treatment or the other way around. Opting for this can make policies cheaper and can work well if you are more worried about fast diagnosis or more concerned about available treatment options.

The options can be more limited for life cover if you’re currently undergoing breast cancer treatment or have been recently diagnosed. However, the good news is that there are a few options available that can provide some level of protection for you and your loved ones.

  • Guaranteed life insurance
  • A guaranteed life insurance policy won’t take your medical history into account when you apply, which can work well for people living with cancer

Guaranteed life insurance can be extremely helpful for people who have serious medical conditions or lifestyle factors that could make getting standard life insurance a little more complicated.

  • Personal accident insurance
  • While not strictly life insurance, personal accident insurance will protect you against any accidental injuries. These policies will often include accidental death cover or you may be able to add it for a small extra cost.

These policies can cost as little as £9 per month and offer options to increase your level of cover and add on extra benefits like children’s cover.

These policies can give you peace of mind that you have some financial protection in place, and you should be able to switch to a typical life insurance policy once your cancer has been in remission for several years.

There are few key stages to think about if you want to buy life insurance and have or have had breast cancer. They are:

    • Currently in treatment: If you are receiving treatment now, your options for cover will be more limited. There are some specialists products that can be available though, which will offer at least some cover and peace of mind.
    • Post treatment: Your options will remain more limited for 12 to 24 months after receiving cancer treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
    • In remission: Once you have been in remission for 2 or more years, your options for policies will become wider and much cheaper for you. It will become even easier to get standard life insurance the longer that you have been in remission for.

YES – If you were to pass away due to breast cancer or anything related, your life insurance policy should pay out.

Cancer is one the most common reasons for claims on life insurance policies in the UK. Life insurance is the best and easiest way to offer your loved ones extra financial security when you are no longer around.

Life insurance will pay out a cash lump sum in the event of your death which your family and loved ones can use to cover important expenses like:

    • Funeral costs
    • Mortgage repayments
    • Repayment of debts
    • School fees
    • Childcare costs
    • Cost of living

Something that is great about life insurance is there are a variety of policy options to choose from, so you can pick the one that works best for your budget and the level of cover you need. You can choose from:

If you’re not sure which type of cover is right for you, you can get free and friendly advice from a breast cancer life insurance specialist.

YES – It is definitely possible to get life insurance if you have a family history of breast cancer, especially if you speak to a specialist.

It’s standard for insurers to ask questions about your family history of serious conditions like cancer. They will consider this when assessing your application but it’s not likely that family history alone would mean you can’t get covered.

The simplest way to find the perfect protection for your family is to speak to a breast cancer life insurance specialist.

Our team have more than 20 years worth of expertise and can guide you through the process every step of the way. Our goal is to make it easier and more straightforward for people who have faced breast cancer to get the right protection for their families.

And the best part is, we will donate to Pink Ribbon Foundation for every policy sold through our Pink Ribbon Foundation page!

YES – There are some other brilliant insurance policies that can offer financial protection and support for you and your loved ones.

  • Income protection insurance
  • If you have income protection insurance and are diagnosed with breast cancer you should be able to claim on your policy if you need time off work.

Your insurance policy will then begin paying out a regular momthly income to help you with your important bills and expenses. You will usually be able to claim for anywhere between 12 months to 24 months. Some longer term policies will even pay out right until retirement age if needed, if your doctor says you are unable to work.

  • Critical illness cover
  • Critical illness cover will pay out a cash lump sum if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, which can be used in any way you see fit. You can use the money to cover medical expenses, pay for travel to and from hospital or for a special treat for your loved ones.

If you have had breast cancer in the past, you may not be able to claim if this reoccurs if your policy was bought after your previous diagnosis. This will depend on your insurers own views though, so you should check your policy terms and conditions thoroughly.

Even if you have already had cancer, critical illness insurance will still pay out for a wide range of other conditions that could develop in the future offering you some extra security and peace of mind.

  • Health insurance
  • Private health insurance helps you to cover the cost of private medical care, which is appealing if you are concerned about the current state of NHS services.

These policies won’t cover pre-existing conditions, so if you have already been diagnosed with cancer it’s likely you won’t be able to claim for treatment.

You will however be able to claim for medical issues that could happen in the future and your policy will give you access to faster diagnosis, top quality specialists and additional perks like online GP services and even discounts on top high street brands!

  • Personal accident insurance
  • Personal accident insurance is a useful policy which could be considered an alternative to traditional life insurance.

These policies are cost-effective (can be as little as £9 per month!) and will pay out a cash lump sum if you need to claim for accidental injuries. Many policies will also include cover for accidental death and this can be useful if you cannot access traditional life cover.

Note: If you have had cancer, it’s always best to speak to an expert before applying for these policies so they can tell you if you will be able to get cover and which insurers will offer the best prices.

Is it worth paying for life insurance?

Yes, if you’ve got children or financial dependents then you should have life insurance to protect them if you die. Martin Lewis and the Financial Conduct Authority recommend that you take out life insurance to protect your family and your home. Generally, life insurance premiums start from as little as £5 per month and will be cheaper for younger adults.

    Common myths about life insurance:

    • Life insurance won’t pay out (pays out 98% of claims)
    • People with medical conditions can’t have life insurance
    • Life insurance is expensive
    • Savings can be just as effective as life insurance

What does life insurance cover you for?

Life insurance is a monthly renewable ‘term insurance’ contract that pays out a cash lump sum or regular payments on death to your family or beneficiaries. Policies are most commonly used for family protection or mortgage protection for your loved ones if you die and your household income reduces, plus the additional issues of losing a parent or carer.

Traditional life insurance will not exclude any pre-existing medical conditions and will cover suicide after 12 or 24 months. You can also use life insurance for business protection purposes as well as tax-efficient business life insurance for directors or key people.

What are the disadvantages of life insurance?

The biggest and most common problem that consumers have with life insurance is the cost and the monthly premiums. This is the top reason for policy cancellations and why more people don’t take out life insurance to protect their family.

Another key disadvantage with life insurance is that it holds no investment value, nor can you cash it in. Life insurance works like any other traditional general insurance policy (e.g. car insurance, house insurance, pet insurance etc.), you pay a monthly premium and it will pay out in the event of a claim. Some people decide to use savings instead of taking out life insurance but you need to make sure that you have sufficient savings to cover the costs of death for your family.

Why do I need life insurance?

The fact is that nobody actually ‘needs’ life insurance, but it is strongly recommended that families and couples have cover to protect their loved ones in the event of death. Martin Lewis recommends life insurance and says “this is something that every parent, partner, or person with any other type of dependent needs to consider”.

Life insurance financially protects your loved ones if you die and pays out a cash lump sum to repay your mortgage, pay for school fees, replace lost income, and pay for regular outgoings. Mortgage life insurance is not linked to your mortgage debt so you can use it to pay off some or all of your mortgage.
