What is NHS cash benefit?
Most UK health insurance companies offer a policy benefit called an ‘NHS cash benefit’. This benefit allows you to claim cashback from your insurer if you need to stay overnight in an NHS hospital. Your insurance company might limit this to a set number of nights per year (e.g. 30 nights) or a maximum total amount (e.g. £2,000).
Many health insurance companies will even provide cashback for in patient or day patient medical care, but this will depend on your policy. In most cases, your insurer will transfer your cash pay out directly into the bank account associated with your policy.
Will an NHS cash benefit always pay out?
Private health insurance won’t pay out in every situation, and your insurer may not pay out for every NHS hospital stay. For example, they may not pay out if you are admitted to an NHS hospital to treat a pre-existing or chronic medical condition.
These rules will vary slightly between insurers, so you should ask your insurance company or broker for more information if you’re unsure about when you can claim.

What is Bupa’s NHS cancer cash benefit?
Most insurers offer an NHS cash benefit, but Bupa also provides an NHS cancer cash benefit to provide extra support for members who are diagnosed with cancer. These benefits can be particularly useful if you haven’t opted for full Bupa cancer cover and need to receive most or all of your treatment from the NHS.
Bupa policyholders who are diagnosed with cancer can claim Bupa cash benefits for NHS cancer treatment. You can claim cashback for:
- In-patient cancer treatment (£100 per night).
- Outpatient, day patient or home cancer treatments (£100 per treatment).
- £100 per 3 weekly course of oral chemotherapy or anti-hormone therapy (not available from a GP).
How do you claim an NHS cash benefit from Bupa?
You shouldn’t need to pre-authorise NHS treatments with Bupa and can claim cashback within 6 months of receiving NHS care. You will need to fill in a claim form and post it Bupa before you receive any cashback for your NHS hospital stay. The form will ask for details like:
- Your name, address, date of birth, and Bupa membership number.
- Details about the condition you are claiming for.
- Details about your treatment (treatment date, medications etc.).
You can either fill in these details online and print off the form or print the form and write in the details in black pen (must use capital letters). Once you have completed your form, you can post it to:
Bupa,
Bupa Place,
102 The Quays,
Salford,
M50 3SP
In some cases, Bupa may need to contact the doctor that you saw for further details about your treatment. You can either request a report and send it to Bupa yourself or give Bupa permission to request this report on your behalf.

Aviva NHS Cash Benefit
Aviva members can claim a cash benefit of £100 for every night spent in an NHS hospital (up to 30 nights per year). You can’t claim this benefit if you have chosen Aviva’s 6 week wait option, so it isn’t available for all Aviva members.
Aviva also offers an NHS cancer cash benefit, but it will only pay out for NHS treatment that would have been covered by Aviva if you claimed for private care. Aviva’s NHS cancer cash benefit pays out £100 per day or night spent in an NHS hospital when receiving cancer treatment such as outpatient chemotherapy or radiotherapy, outpatient surgeries, or at home IV chemotherapy.
You can’t claim multiple cash benefits from the same date (e.g. if you received two forms of treatment in one day). You are capped at a payment of £100 per day at maximum.
