Requirements for National Friendly health insurance

To buy a National Friendly My PMI policy you must:

  • Be a permanent resident in the UK not including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man (registered with a UK GP for at least 6 months)
  • Be between the age of 18 – 85 years

  • Inform National Friendly of any changes to your personal details e.g. change of name or address

YES – Pre-existing conditions shouldn’t stop you from buying health insurance from National Friendly. You won’t be covered for these conditions though but will be able to claim for other unrelated medical issues that happen after you have your policy.

How to claim on National Friendly health insurance

These are the steps you will need to take when making a claim with National Friendly:

  1. Visit your usual GP about your symptoms and get a referral if you need further testing or to see a specialist
  2. Contact the National Friendly claims team
  3. You will either be recommended a specialist (guided option) or you can choose from a list of National Friendly approved specialists for your treatment
  4. National Friendly will cover the costs of your treatment as agreed in your policy documents

For any musculoskeletal or mental health claims, National Friendly will have a specialist call you back to determine your best treatment options (You don’t need to see a GP first for these claims)

National Friendly hospital lists

National Friendly gives their members the choice of two hospital lists when they apply:

  1. National Friendly Standard hospitals list: This is the lowest cost option which gives you access to top quality care but excludes a list of hospitals where the cost is higher than elsewhere in the country
  2. National Friendly Extended hospitals list: This list allows you to get treatment at any National Friendly approved hospital in the UK, giving you more choice in the specialists you use (mostly London based)

How to cancel National Friendly health insurance

You can cancel your National Friendly policy at any point during your plan. To switch providers or if you no longer want the cover, your first step will be to contact National Friendly.

You can do this by calling their main contact number or by submitting an enquiry on their website.

If you cancel within the 30 day ‘cooling off’ period, you will receive a full refund of any premiums paid to National Friendly. This is if you haven’t already claimed on your policy.

How to complain about National Friendly health insurance

National Friendly are open to feedback from their customers and have procedures in place for any complaints you may have. You are always entitled to submit a complaint if you aren’t happy with the product or service you have received from National Friendly.

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is an impartial and free service for financial services customers in the UK. This service can be used to settle any disputes between life insurance companies and their customers in the United Kingdom. Choice of cover ‘levels’ to suit your budget – Each cover level will offer different amounts of cover and you can choose a lower or higher level depending on your needs and how much you can afford to pay

Can add UP TO 10 children to your policy – Don’t worry if you have a bigger family, as National Friendly allows you to add up to 10 children to your policy (if they all live at the same address). Children can be covered up to age 23.

Babies added with NO medical information – You can add a baby to your policy within 3 months of their birth without providing any medical information (they won’t be covered for any congenital health issues)

Dental and optical cover – National Friendly will pay out for specific serious dental and optical procedures as part of your core cover
