The Exeter health insurance (also known as The Exeter Health+) is a private medical insurance policy. There are two options for health insurance cover which are:

  • The Exeter Health+ (traditional)
  • The Exeter Health+ (guided)

The Exeter health insurance policies are very flexible allowing you to add on the extras that best suit you on top of the already comprehensive core cover. You can also choose the ‘guided’ option which can help you cut costs if you are concerned about budget.

Some of the key benefits included in core cover are:

When you apply for The Exeter health insurance, you will be given the choice of two policies. The policy you choose determines the number of Exeter approved hospitals you can be treated in and how your claims process will work.

1. The Exeter ‘traditional’ Health +: You are given 3 hospital lists to choose from when you buy your policy. Your GP or doctor can refer you to any named specialist and then you can then choose the hospital you want to be treated by from your hospital list.

2. The Exeter ‘guided’ Health +: You don’t choose an Exeter hospital list when you buy your policy. Instead your GP will make an open referral to a specialist and The Exeter will give you a recommended shortlist to choose from.

Self inflicted injuries/suicide attempts

Experimental medical treatments (not NICE approved)

Where am I covered?Your policy will cover you for medical treatment within the UK (excludes Channel Islands and Isle of Man).
Increasing cover option included?To increase your level of cover you can add on additional benefits to your policy.  
This includes options like enhanced out patient cover and mental health cover.
Decreasing cover option included?There isn’t a decreasing cover option but you can choose the ‘guided’ plan.  
This plan signposts you to an approved list of specialists rather than a full hospital list, and so is usually cheaper.  
You can lower the cost of your policy by removing add ons when you come to renew your plan.
Premium options (when do I pay?)You can pay monthly or annually via Direct Debit, whichever option suits you.

Most people will be eligible for a health insurance policy, but these are the main requirements to know about before you apply:

  • You must live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
  • You must pay all premiums for the cover to continue
  • You must answer all questions you are asked honestly when you apply
  • You must inform The Exeter about changes to personal details e.g. change of name or address
  • You must pay any excesses agreed to in your policy documents when you claim
  • The Exeter must authorise your claim before you start any treatments, tests or consultations

The price of health insurance can vary with any provider as insurers will consider factors such as your age when deciding on price. The price you pay will also depend on the specific policy you choose and if you want to add on any extra benefits.

You can opt for ‘guided’ cover compared to traditional The Exeter Health + which will usually cost less, but still provides the same great core cover.

Another easy way to lower the cost of your policy is to choose to pay a higher excess for any treatments you claim for. You can choose a claims excess of between £0 to £5000 maximum. The higher the excess amount you choose, the lower the cost of your policy will be each month.

YES – it should still be possible to get health insurance from The Exeter if you have one or more medical conditions. It’s important to note though that these conditions might not be covered by your policy.

Whether you have cover for pre-existing conditions will depend on the type of underwriting you choose when you apply. Your expert health insurance advisor will be able to explain how each type of underwriting will work but here is a quick breakdown for you:

1. Full medical underwriting: You provide full details of your medical history which can help lower the cost of your cover. With this option, you will be covered for any pre-existing conditions that The Exeter agrees to cover.

2. Standard moratorium: You don’t need to disclose any medical conditions you have when you apply. For the first two years of cover, you won’t be covered for any medical conditions you have been diagnosed with/received treatment for within the last 5 years.

3. Continued moratorium: This option allows you to continue your waiting period (as detailed above) from a previous health insurance policy.

EXAMPLE: If you are swapping from an existing health insurance policy with Aviva, the two years in which you won’t be covered for pre-existing medical conditions would be one year. This is because the first year will be from your Aviva policy.

How to claim on The Exeter health insurance

The first few steps of claiming on your policy will be the same regardless of whether you have chosen traditional cover or guided cover.

Here is the process for both policy types:

4. The Exeter then confirms what you are covered for and you can select any hospital from your list to proceed with your treatment

The Exeter health insurance hospital lists

As with most health insurance providers, the Exeter has several hospital lists that you can choose from for your policy. You decide which list seems like the right fit for you when you apply.

Your options are:

1. The Exeter Essentials hospital list: This option is great for someone with a smaller budget and still gives you access to large hospitals and NHS private units for a lower cost.

2. The Exeter Standard hospitals list: This will include all the same hospital/units as in the essentials list PLUS extra independent hospitals for a wider range of choice.

How to cancel The Exeter health insurance

You are always entitled to cancel your health insurance policy early if you no longer want the cover or want to swap to another provider.

To cancel your health insurance with The Exeter, you simply contact them and tell them you want to cancel.

Enhanced out-patient cover – You can enhance your out-patient cover to add cover for tests such as X-rays and ECGs and specialist fees.

Unlimited out-patient diagnostics cover – You can upgrade your out-patient cover so all out-patient diagnostic tests are fully covered.

Mental health cover benefit – This benefit includes extra mental health support by covering out-patient mental health consultations and treatments. You will also be covered for any specialist treatments as an in-patient or day patient for up to 28 days (nursing and accommodation).

Additional therapies cover – You can receive treatment from specialists such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, acupuncturists and more. This includes two consultations with a dietician to help you improve your health and lifestyle.
