AIG Life Insurance Review 2024

American International Group (AIG) is one of the biggest global insurance providers, with thousands of offices across the World. You might already be familiar with AIG Life UK as they have been operating in the UK for over 70 years with literally millions of current life insurance customers.

AIG Life sell a comprehensive range of life insurance polices and also include attractive extra features for customers, including online health support, bereavement counselling services and access to completely FREE legal advice if needed (about Probate specifically).

While they are a popular choice for UK consumers, AIG Life won’t be the best or cheapest option for every life insurance customer and the ‘right’ choice for you will depend on your own situation and the type of cover you need. This is why it is important to do some research and consider factors like customer service, product features and value for money before making a decision.

In our latest independent review for AIG Life, our insurance experts explain who AIG are and what they can offer to life insurance customers in the UK. Our main aim is to make sure that you get the right life insurance to protect your mortgage, partner, children or business, whether this is from AIG or another provider that is more suited to you.

60-Second Summary – AIG Life Insurance Review 2024

AIG (or ‘American International Group’) is an award winning global life insurance and pensions provider. As well as having millions of customers across, AIG Life is one of the biggest and best-known life insurance providers on the market in the UK.

  • AIG Life provides personal and business life insurance products, offering options such as term life insurance, critical illness insurance, and whole of life insurance.
  • AIG offers a wide range of additional benefits to their life insurance customers, such as a ‘Smart Health’ online GP app, claims support services, and a free probate helpline.
  • As of September 2023, a merger was agreed between AIG Life and Aviva (another of the UK’s biggest general insurance companies). This shouldn’t have a big impact on current customers and AIG Life and Aviva should begin operating as one business, following FCA approval in 2024.
  • If you are unsure if AIG is the right fit to protect your home, family or business, it can be helpful to get some free advice from a life insurance specialist.

AIG or American International Group is a global insurance brand with operations in over 80 countries around the world. The company was originally founded in 1919 by Cornelius Vander Starr in China, by the name of American Asiatic Underwriters (AAU).

AIG first opened offices in the US in 1926. In 1939 AIG moved in headquarters from Shanghai, China to New York City. In 1953 AIG’s first UK office was opened in London, shortly followed by an office in Australia opened 4 years later.

In January 2019, AIG was recorded to have more then 49,000 employees around the world across its 3 core business operations. These operations are General Insurance, Life & Retirement, and its technology-enabled subsidiary, which is a standalone section of the business.

AIG first listed shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1984, building the business over time. They continued to develop new income sources through acquisitions throughout the 90’s. In 1992 it agreed to join with Lloyd’s of London, the insurance and reinsurance market. They established the very first insurance company based underwriting operation, which was located at Lloyd’s offices.

American International Group has a proud history of winning industry awards. They have won many awards for their continued innovation and services to the life insurance industry, including:

2021 Awards

Protection Review – Organisation of the Year

COVER Excellence Awards – Outstanding Individual Critical Illness

Financial Services Forum Awards – Best Innovation in Insurance

One of the most popular AIG personal protection policies is ‘Term Life Insurance’ and this type of policy is the best and cheapest way to protect your family and your home.

Term life insurance is a form of cover which protects you for a set number of years. You can buy level term life insurance (family protection) where your policy benefit never changes or decreasing life insurance (mortgage protection) where the amount your policy would pay out would get lower over time. Decreasing policies are designed to protect repayment mortgages and the cover amount will decrease as your remaining mortgage balance gets lower.

AIG Life also offers increasing cover which means that your cover amount will actually get higher over time, so you never need to worry that your policy will lose value as the cost of expenses such as funeral bills become higher. This will usually cost slightly more, and your premiums would also increase slightly each year as your cover amount does.

The table below shows a quick summary of all the key policy details and term for AIG ‘Your Life’ term life insurance.

AIG Life also sells income protection insurance policies, which will pay out a set monthly benefit if you can’t work due to injury or illness. You must be signed off work by a doctor or GP for 4 weeks minimum to claim on your policy and you can claim for either up to 24 months (short term income protection) or for as long as needed (long term income protection).

AIG recently revamped their income protection insurance policies at the start of 2024, now offering better benefits and higher levels of protection for employed, self employed and unemployed people. They have added a brand new income replacement guarantee and a premium waiver for up to six months if you’re made redundant from your job. The policies are now available to a wider range of customers too, with the previous maximum age limit of 54 for new applicants being increased to age 59.

You can also buy Group Life Insurance from AIG Life Limited via an intermediary or expert life insurance broker and this is a type of business life insurance policy. This cover is designed to protect a company’s employees under a single policy, paid for by the business.

AIG life insurance is one of several insurance providers in the UK to offer group life insurance, so you should look at all your options to work out which will be best and cheapest for your business.

Premiums for AIG group life insurance will be priced based on the number of members insured under the scheme and will also vary depending on the level of cover. Most group life insurance policies are set to pay out a multiple of the employee’s salary, but could pay out a lump sum benefit depending on which policy type you choose.

It works just like any other life insurance policy, with the key difference being that your policy is guaranteed to pay out when you need it to.

You will also be able to choose from several optional benefits. These benefits can be added to your AIG life insurance policy at an extra cost and these optional benefits include:

Waiver of premium – Available with AIG life insurance at an additional charge, that pays your life insurance premiums if you are unable to work due to accident or illness for more than 26 weeks.

Total and Permanent Disability option (TPD) – Can be added to any AIG critical illness insurance policy that pays out if you become disabled.

Enhances Critical Illness Insurance (adult) – Increased benefits and conditions covered under your critical illness insurance policy (including pregnancy complications).

Enhances Critical Illness Insurance (children) – Increased benefits and conditions covered under your children’s critical illness insurance policy (including birth defect cover).

You are within your rights to cancel a life insurance policy at any point, and without incurring any fees or charges from AIG Life. To cancel your AIG life insurance policy you will need to:

  • Cancel your AIG life insurance direct debit with your bank or via your online banking app
  • Contact the AIG life insurance cancellations team to let them know that you no longer want your policy

There are a number of things to consider when or before deciding to cancel your cover and it isn’t a decision that should be rushed into. Life insurance from another provider could cost more, as you will be older than when you originally took out cover. While reviewing your cover and switching providers can be a good way to save money, it’s wise to get some quotes first to make sure that you won’t end up paying far more elsewhere.

Note: If you are struggling with the cost of your cover, AIG Life does allow you to reduce your cover amount rather than cancelling completely, so this may be an option you would want to consider.

What happens to AIG joint life insurance if we separate?

Separation or divorce is a common issue in many relationships and it’s possible to keep your part of the joint life insurance policy. You need to contact AIG and provide some evidence of the separation or a new mortgage (if applicable) and they will be able to arrange for your cover to continue without your partner.

What can I do if I can’t afford to pay life insurance premiums?

If you can no longer afford your monthly premiums, AIG provides a number of options for its life insurance customers to help them to continue with cover and reduce their premiums (e.g. reduce cover amount). You will need to contact their customer service team to ask about arranging this for you.

Who bought AIG insurance UK?

A merger between AIG Life and Aviva was announced back in September 2023, which is one of the biggest changes to the UK life insurance industry that has happened in years. From 2024, AIG Life and Aviva will begin operating as one business. We explain this and all other recent life insurance industry changes in our recent Life Insurance Market Review for 2024.

What is AIG life insurance called now?

One of the biggest questions that we hear from customers is whether premiums are fair or reasonable for them. Below are some examples of AIG life insurance premiums compared to other insurers to show how they compare.

Premiums will vary from time to time and can be more affordable or reasonable for some customers than others. AIG life insurance is also not necessarily the best insurance provider for people with pre-existing medical conditions, but can be good for some conditions. If you have medical conditions, it is usually worth speaking to a life insurance expert before you apply to make sure you are speaking to the right providers for your own situation and the type of cover that you need.

Most life insurance providers now use independent customer review services such as Trustpilot or Feefo to gather feedback and reviews. AIG life insurance uses Trustpilot for its customer reviews and there are actually two separate pages that contain life insurance reviews (AIG Life Limited and AIG UK). The AIG Life Limited page contains life insurance reviews only, whereas the AIG UK page contains a mixture of reviews for all AIG UK products and policies. This page contains a small number of reviews (only 91) and it’s clear to see that the AIG Life Limited page is the main page, so this is the one we will focus on in this review.

Trustpilot score (AIG Life Limited) – 3.1 out of 5.0 Stars

Screenshot of the AIG Life Limited Trustpilot review page

There are a mixture of positive and negative reviews as is often the case with big financial services businesses, but it is important to note that all negative reviews are responded with an attempt to resolve issues within less than 24 hours.

Note: These scores are accurate as of 31/01/2024 and may change over time as more customer reviews are added. They are also not a full indication of AIG processes and product quality, so it’s important to think about other factors such as price, product features and extra benefits before making any decisions.

You can’t apply for or buy policies directly from AIG Life, so you would need to apply through an intermediary or life insurance broker.

Is it worth paying for life insurance?

Yes, if you’ve got children or financial dependents then you should have life insurance to protect them if you die. Martin Lewis and the Financial Conduct Authority recommend that you take out life insurance to protect your family and your home. Generally, life insurance premiums start from as little as £5 per month and will be cheaper for younger adults.

Common myths about life insurance:

  • Life insurance won’t pay out (pays out 98% of claims)
  • People with medical conditions can’t have life insurance
  • Life insurance is expensive
  • Savings can be just as effective as life insurance

What does life insurance cover you for?

Life insurance is a monthly renewable ‘term insurance’ contract that pays out a cash lump sum or regular payments on death to your family or beneficiaries. Policies are most commonly used for family protection or mortgage protection for your loved ones if you die and your household income reduces, plus the additional issues of losing a parent or carer.

Traditional life insurance will not exclude any pre-existing medical conditions and will cover suicide after 12 or 24 months. You can also use life insurance for business protection purposes as well as tax-efficient business life insurance for directors or key people.

What are the disadvantages of life insurance?

The biggest and most common problem that consumers have with life insurance is the cost and the monthly premiums. This is the top reason for policy cancellations and why more people don’t take out life insurance to protect their family.

Another key disadvantage with life insurance is that it holds no investment value, nor can you cash it in. Life insurance works like any other traditional general insurance policy (e.g. car insurance, house insurance, pet insurance etc.), you pay a monthly premium and it will pay out in the event of a claim. Some people decide to use savings instead of taking out life insurance but you need to make sure that you have sufficient savings to cover the costs of death for your family.

Why do I need life insurance?

The fact is that nobody actually ‘needs’ life insurance, but it is strongly recommended that families and couples have cover to protect their loved ones in the event of death. Martin Lewis recommends life insurance and says “this is something that every parent, partner, or person with any other type of dependent needs to consider”.

Life insurance financially protects your loved ones if you die and pays out a cash lump sum to repay your mortgage, pay for school fees, replace lost income, and pay for regular outgoings. Mortgage life insurance is not linked to your mortgage debt so you can use it to pay off some or all of your mortgage.
