Budget Life Insurance Review

Budget Insurance is a popular option for UK customers who want simple life insurance policies at an affordable price. Since 1996, they have helped millions of customers get good quality and low-cost life insurance policies to protect their homes and families.

They also add on some great (and free) extra benefits for their life insurance customers. This includes dedicated counselling after diagnosis of critical or terminal illnesses and end of life legal advice and Will writing services.

There are lots of factors to think about when buying life insurance and it’s important to consider all your options carefully. It’s not always easy to work out which insurance provider will be best for you and many consumers find it useful to get some extra advice from a life insurance expert.

60-Second Summary – Budget Life Insurance

The aim of this guide is to give you some more information and context about who Budget Insurance are and the policies that they sell. We hope that this will help you to work out if Budget Insurance feels like the right fit to look after your home or family.

  • Budget Insurance sells two simple options for life insurance: Level term life insurance (family protection) and decreasing life insurance (mortgage protection).
  • Budget Insurance also sells critical illness insurance, which will pay out a cash lump sum on diagnosis of one of 22 specified medical conditions.
  • There are helpful free benefits included for Budget life insurance customers including terminal illness cover, the companions counselling service and help with Wills and Trusts.
  • There are definite advantages to buying Budget life insurance, but they won’t be the right insurer for everyone. This is where it can be helpful to talk to a life insurance expert who can help you compare all your options quickly and easily.

Budget Insurance is UK company which specialises in various types of insurance cover including life, home, car and van insurance.

They have around 4 million customers across the country and are highly rated by them, scoring 4.4 out of 5.0 stars on independent review site TrustPilot.

They are a smaller insurance company with a focus on providing straightforward policies and good customer service. They state on their website ‘We’re here to help you get the cover you need to enjoy life now’.

Who is Budget insurance owned by?

Budget Insurance is part of the BGL Insurance Group, which was founded in 1992. This group launched popular online insurer Beagle Street* and they partner with Virgin Money for their life insurance products.

Being part of this group is what allows Budget to offer discount prices, as they work as an insurance aggregator rather than a traditional broker or insurance provider.

The BGL Group also established the price comparison site Comparethemarket.com, which became a household name in the UK due to their meerkat based advertising campaigns.

Note: *Beagle Street was launched by the BGL Group in 2013 and they owned the business for almost 10 years before selling to One Family back in 2022.

Budget life insurance is a simple option for life cover which can work well for certain customers. There are two types of life insurance available from Budget Insurance which are:

  • Level term life insurance: These policies will pay out a set cash lump sum to your loved ones in the event of your death to help cover key expenses like funeral bills.
  • Decreasing life insurance: These policies are designed specifically to protect your mortgage and the amount of cover will reduce over time as your remaining mortgage balance decreases.

Budget Insurance will provide life cover up to £750,000, and you can choose the level of cover that best suits your needs and how much you can afford to spend. You can buy either single or joint life insurance, but a joint policy will only pay out on the death of the first partner (Joint Life First Death).

This is a standard option for joint life insurance policies, where the remaining partner’s cover would end after a claim is paid and they will need to apply for a new policy.

It’s possible to buy joint life insurance that pays out after both partners have died, which is generally used to help avoid expensive inheritance tax. This is known as a ‘Joint Life Second Death’ policy and is not sold by Budget Insurance, though it is available from other top UK insurance providers.

Who underwrites Budget life insurance?

Budget Insurance policies are underwritten by Scottish Friendly Assurance Society, who have more than 150 years’ experience with UK life insurance.

They are a UK mutual company which specialises in life insurance and investments, and they also underwrite and provide policies for other insurers including:

It’s standard for smaller insurance businesses to be supported by larger companies like Scottish Friendly, so this isn’t anything to be concerned about.

*Over 1,100 independent customer reviews

Many people in the UK will immediately think of big companies like Aviva or Legal & General when looking for life insurance. However, there are advantages to choosing a smaller company like Budget Insurance that are worth considering.

Some of the main reasons that customers choose to buy Budget life insurance include:

  • Good customer review scores (more than 12,000 customers rated Budget Insurance as 4.0 stars or higher on independent review site TrustPilot)
  • Low prices compared to bigger companies
  • Simple and easy to understand options for life cover
  • Option to add on critical illness cover (and children’s critical illness cover)
  • Good range of FREE customer benefits including legal advice services and help with topics like Wills, Trusts and Probate
  • Easy online access to your insurance documents (less risk of misplacing important information)

Most of the online reviews for Budget Insurance note their reasonable prices, simple and straightforward policies, and excellent customer service. Everyone will have their own opinions about if an insurance provider is ‘good’ but looking at information like this can be useful in helping you to make up your mind.

While Budget life insurance offers some great policy features and benefits, they won’t be the right choice for every customer. You should always do some research and compare what a few providers have to offer before buying a new life insurance policy.

Budget life insurance works in the same way as policies sold by most UK insurance providers. To apply for Budget life insurance, you will need to supply basic information like:

  • Your age
  • Height and weight
  • Smoker status
  • Any medical conditions
  • Lifestyle factors (e.g. units of alcohol per week)
  • Occupation

This information will help Budget Insurance to work out if they can offer you cover and what price you will pay. The pay out from a Budget life insurance policy can act as a lifeline for UK families, offering financial support at an incredibly difficult time.

Generally, Budget customers choose to buy life insurance to help support their loved ones with key expenses like:

  • Mortgage repayments
  • Rent payments
  • Funeral bills
  • Repaying any outstanding debts
  • Covering school fees
  • General cost of living

Budget Insurance only sells ‘term life insurance’ policies, which means that you will need to choose a set number of years for your policy to last for (policy term). Your policy and the cover it provides will end after this set period is over, even if you haven’t claimed.

Here we have put together a simple overview of the main features of Budget life insurance and how these policies work.

More information – Budget Insurance – Your Policy Summary

What isn’t covered by Budget life insurance?

As Budget Insurance sells traditional life insurance policies, these policies should cover you in most situations and will pay out in the event of your death. Standard life insurance policies won’t exclude things like medical conditions as a reason to claim (e.g. if you died as a result of a heart attack).

The main reasons why Budget Insurance (and other providers) could refuse to pay out on a life insurance claim are:

  • If the claim is for suicide within the first 12 months of the policy
  • If you didn’t mention relevant information within your initial application (non-disclosure)

Budget life insurance will also not pay out terminal illness benefit if you try to claim when you are within the last 12 months of your policy term.

YES – Budget Insurance also sells critical illness insurance alongside their life insurance policies. The 3 options for critical illness cover that they sell are:

  • Budget Life Insurance with Critical Illness: This is a combined policy which will pay out if you die or are diagnosed with a critical or terminal illness (cover stops once a claim has been paid)
  • Budget Additional Critical Illness: This works similarly to the Life Insurance with Critical Illness policy, but your life cover would continue even after a critical illness claim has been paid out
  • Budget Children’s Critical Illness Cover (childhood critical illness): This can be added to your critical illness policy and pays out either £25,000 or 25% of your cover amount (sum assured) if your child is diagnosed with a critical illness

Critical illness cover is a policy which acts as a financial safety net, paying out a cash lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition. This money can make a huge difference and allow you to focus on recovery without worrying about the financial impact of your condition.

You will be able to choose how much you would like your policy to pay out when you apply. It’s useful to consider things like your typical monthly outgoings (rent, mortgage, utilities etc.) when working out how much cover you might need.

Which critical illnesses do Budget Insurance cover?

As with other insurers, Budget critical illness cover will only pay out for medical conditions that are included within your policy terms and conditions. The medical condition will also need to meet the exact definition in your policy documents for a valid claim.

Currently, Budget Insurance will pay out for 22 specified medical conditions and here is a full list of all critical illnesses covered by Budget Insurance:

  • Alzheimer’s disease (with permanent symptoms)
  • Aorta graft surgery (for disease or trauma)
  • Benign brain tumour (with permanent symptoms)
  • Blindness (permanent and irreversible)
  • Cancer (not including less advanced cases)
  • Coma (with permanent symptoms)
  • Coronary artery bypass grafts (with surgery)
  • Deafness (permanent and irreversible)
  • Heart attack
  • Heart valve replacement or repair (with surgery)
  • HIV if caught in the UK from a blood transfusion, physical assault or at work in an eligible occupation (emergency services, medical professional or armed forces)
  • Kidney failure (which requires permanent dialysis)
  • Loss of hands or feet (permanent physical severance)
  • Loss of speech (permanent and irreversible)
  • Major organ transplant (from another donor)
  • Motor neurone disease (with permanent symptoms)
  • Multiple sclerosis (with current symptoms)
  • Paralysis of limbs (total and irreversible)
  • Parkinson’s disease (with permanent symptoms)
  • Stroke
  • Third degree burns (covers 20% of the surface area of either the face or body)
  • Traumatic brain injury (with permanent symptoms)

Note: You will need to survive for 14 or more days following diagnosis to be able to claim on a Budget critical illness insurance policy.

How can I save money on Budget life insurance?

There are some quick and simple ways that you can save money on any life insurance policy. Our main tips to saving on your life cover are:

  1. Reduce the amount of cover – It will normally cost less to buy a lower amount of cover. You should of course make sure this amount still offers enough protection and often it’s worth paying slightly more to ensure you have the right level of cover.
  2. Reduce your policy term – A shorter policy term will usually be cheaper but does mean that you may need to apply for another life insurance policy in the future.
  3. Compare quotes from other providers – Shopping around for the lowest quotes is the best way to find a good price. While Budget does offer low pricing, it’s always a good idea to check quotes from multiple providers.
  4. Speak to an expert – A life insurance expert will be able to advise you on whether Budget Insurance can offer you the right level of cover and the lowest price on the market.

Budget life insurance policies will usually work best for customers with no health issues. Like Beagle Street (who are also owned by BGL Group), Budget Insurance often won’t accept applications from people with medical conditions.

There are some excellent alternatives available for UK life insurance customers with medical conditions. There are many insurers currently operating in the UK and the best ones for pre-existing conditions include:

Does Budget life insurance pay out?

In the UK, it’s a common myth that life insurance providers will do anything they can to avoid paying out on a policy claim. This simply isn’t true and in fact around 98% of life insurance are paid out on average every year.

As Budget Insurance is a regulated business, they have to publish accurate claims figures. According to their website, they pay out for 99.1% of life insurance claims (based on 2021 figures).

What brand is Budget Direct?

Budget Direct is a brand that many people online mistake for Budget Insurance. Budget Direct is an insurance company based in Australia and so they would not be able to sell policies to UK customers.

Budget Insurance can be identified by their signature purple branding and can be found online at budgetinsurance.com.

How long has Budget Insurance been around?

Budget Insurance has been operating in the UK since 1996 as a trading name for BISL Limited. With almost 30 years of experience, Budget Insurance has helped to provide car, home, van and life insurance to millions of UK customers.

Who receives the pay out from a Budget life insurance policy?

This is entirely up to you and how you have set your life insurance policy up with Budget Insurance. If you have chosen to write your policy into Trust, this will state who receives the benefit from your life insurance policy.

You can specify this in a Will as well, but many people prefer to use a Trust when dealing with life insurance. This is because a Trust will keep your life insurance policy separate from your overall estate and helps your loved ones to receive a pay out much more quickly.

It can help in avoiding expensive inheritance tax charges and long drawn out legal processes like Probate, providing the maximum support for your family.

Should I buy Budget life insurance?

While Budget Insurance offers decent and uncomplicated life insurance policies, you should think carefully about what you need from your life insurance policy and provider.

When buying life insurance, consider:

  • How much cover you need (£s)
  • How long you want to be covered for (policy term)
  • What type of life insurance you need (Budget only sells term life insurance)

Budget could be a good option for you, but it’s definitely worth exploring your options so you know you are 100% happy with your choice. A life insurance specialist will be able to help you look at quotes across the market and assess which policies best suit your situation and the amount you would like to spend.

What is the cheapest form of life insurance?

The cost of life insurance will vary slightly from person to person, based on factors like your age or medical history. However, certain types of cover will typically be more expensive because they are more comprehensive.

Term life insurance (which is what Budget Insurance sells) is generally the cheapest form of traditional life insurance because it covers you for a set period of time. Policies like whole life insurance will cost more because they cover you for your entire life.

If you think Budget life insurance is the best choice for you, you can get a FREE quote for discount life insurance on our online quote system.

You could apply with Budget Insurance directly, but they will not be able to offer advice or recommendations about which policy would be best for you – they can only explain policy features. They also won’t compare their policies with other providers, so you could miss out on a better deal with another insurer.

If you need some extra advice, speaking to an experienced life insurance broker is the best way to compare multiple policies to ensure you end up with one you are happy with.

Disclaimer: This guide contains general information about the life insurance policies sold by Budget Insurance and how these policies work. The type of cover and provider that is best for you will be based on your own situation, which is why it is useful to speak to an expert.

Is it worth paying for life insurance?

Yes, if you’ve got children or financial dependents then you should have life insurance to protect them if you die. Martin Lewis and the Financial Conduct Authority recommend that you take out life insurance to protect your family and your home. Generally, life insurance premiums start from as little as £5 per month and will be cheaper for younger adults.

Common myths about life insurance:

  • Life insurance won’t pay out (pays out 98% of claims)
  • People with medical conditions can’t have life insurance
  • Life insurance is expensive
  • Savings can be just as effective as life insurance

What does life insurance cover you for?

Life insurance is a monthly renewable ‘term insurance’ contract that pays out a cash lump sum or regular payments on death to your family or beneficiaries. Policies are most commonly used for family protection or mortgage protection for your loved ones if you die and your household income reduces, plus the additional issues of losing a parent or carer.

Traditional life insurance will not exclude any pre-existing medical conditions and will cover suicide after 12 or 24 months. You can also use life insurance for business protection purposes as well as tax-efficient business life insurance for directors or key people.

What are the disadvantages of life insurance?

The biggest and most common problem that consumers have with life insurance is the cost and the monthly premiums. This is the top reason for policy cancellations and why more people don’t take out life insurance to protect their family.

Another key disadvantage with life insurance is that it holds no investment value, nor can you cash it in. Life insurance works like any other traditional general insurance policy (e.g. car insurance, house insurance, pet insurance etc.), you pay a monthly premium and it will pay out in the event of a claim. Some people decide to use savings instead of taking out life insurance but you need to make sure that you have sufficient savings to cover the costs of death for your family.

Why do I need life insurance?

The fact is that nobody actually ‘needs’ life insurance, but it is strongly recommended that families and couples have cover to protect their loved ones in the event of death. Martin Lewis recommends life insurance and says “this is something that every parent, partner, or person with any other type of dependent needs to consider”.

Life insurance financially protects your loved ones if you die and pays out a cash lump sum to repay your mortgage, pay for school fees, replace lost income, and pay for regular outgoings. Mortgage life insurance is not linked to your mortgage debt so you can use it to pay off some or all of your mortgage.
