Zurich Life Insurance Review 2024

Life insurance provides valuable financial support for your loved ones, and there are a range of life insurance companies in the UK that you can choose from. Zurich is one of the UK’s biggest insurance companies, and their life insurance policies pay out a cash lump sum to cover key expenses like mortgage repayments or funeral bills if you die.

It’s important to carefully consider all your options when buying life insurance, and if the insurer that you choose can offer good value for money. Zurich provides top quality life cover (5 Star Defaqto rated), which includes various free benefits like:

  • Free life cover while your application is being processed (up to £250,000).
  • Free critical illness cover while your application is being processed (up to £150,000).
  • Terminal illness benefit is included as standard with Zurich life insurance policies.
  • Separation benefit for joint policies (can be split into two single policies with no medical underwriting needed).
  • Zurich Support Services can offer free counselling, childcare support and more from trained professionals.

In our independent review of Zurich life insurance, our team of experts look at how Zurich life and critical illness insurance works for new and existing customers in 2024. This guide aims to provide as many details as possible, to help you decide whether Zurich is the right insurance company to protect your home and your loved ones.

60-Second Summary – Zurich Life Insurance Review 2024

On this page, our life insurance experts provide in-depth information about what Zurich life insurance does and how these policies work to protect your family financially. This information includes price examples, case studies of real customers and our main tips to save money on your new or existing Zurich policy.

  • You can buy various types of life insurance from Zurich, including level-term (family) life insurance, decreasing (mortgage) life insurance, and family income benefit.
  • Zurich policies are very flexible, with the option to add on extra benefits to enhance your cover. You can also easily customise your policy to suit the level of cover that you need, as Zurich has no maximum limit for cover amounts.
  • Zurich policies tend to be cost-effective, with many policies starting from less than £15 per month. The exact price of your policy may be more or less than this based on your age, health, and the level of cover that you need.
  • Zurich critical illness insurance can be added to your life insurance policy and will pay out a lump sum if you are diagnosed with 1 of 44 (core cover) or 99 (enhanced cover) specified medical conditions.

Zurich Insurance sells a range of different insurance policies, including life insurance, critical illness insurance, and income protection insurance.

Zurich life insurance policies have been designed to protect your family or mortgage by paying out a significant cash lump sum in the event of your death. Your family can use this money however they see fit, but life insurance pay outs are usually used to cover important costs such as repaying any outstanding debts.

Zurich has branches in countries across the World and they consistently release advertisements to promote their products, including this video from Zurich Ireland.

Do I need life insurance?

Whether Zurich is a good choice for you depends on the type of life cover that you need, and your situation (e.g. age and medical history). It’s usually worth comparing quotes from a few insurers to see which ones will offer the best prices.

Zurich life insurance has been highly rated by industry bodies, with 22 life insurance products currently rated 5 Stars by Defaqto. Zurich is also a generally well-liked company, based on a Trustpilot rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 Stars (over 2,000 independent customer reviews).

Note: These online reviews are based on all of Zurich Insurance’s products in the UK and are not exclusive to life insurance products.

The process of applying for Zurich life insurance will be the same as with most insurers. You can apply to Zurich directly or with the help of an experienced life insurance broker for extra support.

Once your application has been approved, you simply set up a Direct Debit with your bank or building society to pay for your policy. You will then be protected until you either die, claim for terminal illness, or cancel your policy.

Note: You can create your Zurich login details to manage your policy online once you have received all your policy documents.

Life Insurance provider reviews

Another popular policy that is sold by Zurich is critical illness insurance, which can be bought alongside your life insurance policy. These policies work as a financial safety net, helping to support you and your loved ones if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition.

Critical illness insurance policies vary between insurance companies, and Zurich critical illness insurance will pay out either 40 conditions (core cover) or 99 conditions (enhanced cover).

Key factors for Zurich Life and Critical Illness Insurance:

  • Core cover will pay out 100% of the cover amount on diagnosis of 38 specified conditions, and 25% (or £25,000) for 2 specified conditions).
  • Enhanced cover will pay out 100% of the cover amount on diagnosis of 51 specified conditions, and 25% (or £25,000) for 48 specified conditions).
  • Your full cover amount will be paid out immediately if you are on an NHS waiting list for 1 of 7 specified conditions (core cover) or £25,000 for bowel disease surgery (enhanced cover).
  • If you are diagnosed with 1 of 10 ‘life-changing’ conditions before the age of 50, you will be paid your full cover amount plus up to £100,000 extra (enhanced cover).
  • If you are diagnosed with 1 of 5 specified pregnancy complications before the age of 45, you will be paid £5,000 (enhanced cover).
  • Zurich children’s critical illness insurance (core) can be added to your policy for an additional cost, which pays out up to £25,000 per claim for each child (cover up until age 22).
  • If your child passes away between 30 days old and their 22nd birthday, you will be paid £5,000 (children’s cover).

Zurich recently released this video, which highlights how critical illness cover can support you if you are diagnosed with a serious illness.

A tale of two stories: Are you as protected as you can be?

Note: You can buy a policy if you are aged between 16 – 69 years old and your policy must end before your 74th birthday. Your policy must last for a minimum of 5 years, with a maximum policy term of 50 years.

Can you put Zurich life insurance in Trust?

Most life insurance providers (Zurich included) will let you write your policy into Trust, with no added fees or costs. A Trust gives you more control over your life insurance benefit, allowing you to specify who receives it and how it is used (see Life Insurance Trust guide).

Types of Zurich life insurance trusts:

Zurich Discretionary Trust: this is the most flexible type of trust available which can allow you to change key details at a later point.

Zurich Absolute Trust: this trust is less flexible, you cannot change who benefits after the trust is in place.

Zurich Group Life Master Trust: this is designed to be used for business protection policies (Zurich Group Life Insurance).

Does life insurance pay out for suicidal death with Zurich?

This can be a hard question to ask if you have experienced mental health issues or suicidal thoughts and is an understandably sensitive topic. However, with something as important as life insurance, you want to make sure you know exactly which events you are covered for.

Zurich life insurance does cover suicide but only after the first 12 months of the policy (known as a suicidal death clause). Most UK life insurance policies are written with a suicide clause for a set time period (usually 12 months but sometimes 24 months).

Choosing your life insurance company is a totally personal decision, and Zurich will work better for some people than others. You should consider the prices and benefits that are available and if this works well for you.

If you are confident that Zurich is the right choice to protect your family, you can apply to them directly or via a life insurance broker. If you have a medical condition or high-risk hobby or occupation, it will usually be best to get whole market advice before making any decisions, as this can make things more complicated.

Is it worth paying for life insurance?

Yes, if you’ve got children or financial dependents then you should have life insurance to protect them if you die. Martin Lewis and the Financial Conduct Authority recommend that you take out life insurance to protect your family and your home. Generally, life insurance premiums start from as little as £5 per month and will be cheaper for younger adults.

Common myths about life insurance:

  • Life insurance won’t pay out (pays out 98% of claims)
  • People with medical conditions can’t have life insurance

What does life insurance cover you for?

Life insurance is a monthly renewable ‘term insurance’ contract that pays out a cash lump sum or regular payments on death to your family or beneficiaries. Policies are most commonly used for family protection or mortgage protection for your loved ones if you die and your household income reduces, plus the additional issues of losing a parent or carer.

Traditional life insurance will not exclude any pre-existing medical conditions and will cover suicide after 12 or 24 months. You can also use life insurance for business protection purposes as well as tax-efficient business life insurance for directors or key people.

What are the disadvantages of life insurance?

The biggest and most common problem that consumers have with life insurance is the cost and the monthly premiums. This is the top reason for policy cancellations and why more people don’t take out life insurance to protect their family.

Another key disadvantage with life insurance is that it holds no investment value, nor can you cash it in. Life insurance works like any other traditional general insurance policy (e.g. car insurance, house insurance, pet insurance etc.), you pay a monthly premium and it will pay out in the event of a claim. Some people decide to use savings instead of taking out life insurance but you need to make sure that you have sufficient savings to cover the costs of death for your family.

Why do I need life insurance?

The fact is that nobody actually ‘needs’ life insurance, but it is strongly recommended that families and couples have cover to protect their loved ones in the event of death. Martin Lewis recommends life insurance and says “this is something that every parent, partner, or person with any other type of dependent needs to consider”.

Life insurance financially protects your loved ones if you die and pays out a cash lump sum to repay your mortgage, pay for school fees, replace lost income, and pay for regular outgoings. Mortgage life insurance is not linked to your mortgage debt so you can use it to pay off some or all of your mortgage.
