Does life insurance pay out for suicidal death with Zurich?

This can be a hard question to ask if you have experienced mental health issues or suicidal thoughts and is an understandably sensitive topic. However, with something as important as life insurance, you want to make sure you know exactly which events you are covered for.

Zurich life insurance does cover suicide but only after the first 12 months of the policy (known as a suicidal death clause). The majority of UK life insurance policies are written with a suicide clause for a set time period (usually 12 months but sometimes 24 months).

Mental health conditions are becoming better understood as years go on and it is standard now to be asked questions about this during a life insurance application. We do appreciate this can be difficult or upsetting but you should always answer as honestly as you can.

Zurich life insurance complaints

You might decide you want to complain about your Zurich life insurance policy for a variety of reasons. No matter why you are unhappy with your cover or experience of Zurich, you are always entitled to complain.

Zurich will always attempt to resolve complaints straight away or in a timely manner. You can contact them via any of the usual contact details or fill in an online complaint form to start this process.

If the FOS believe you have suffered financial loss because of Zurich, they can rule for compensation to be awarded to you.

Zurich group life insurance

As well as single and joint life policies, Zurich also offers group life insurance to its customers. This is designed specifically for business protection, as a key incentive for employers to offer their employees.

This allows a business to protect all (or a specific group of) their employees under one policy. There are several life insurance providers in the UK that sell group life insurance policies, so you have a few options to choose from.

Zurich also gives you the option to add on spouse or partner cover. This benefit will pay out a cash lump sum to support your employee if their significant other passes away during the policy term.

Zurich life insurance trust details

If you want more control over how your life insurance benefit is used and who gets it, you can put your policy in trust. This will let you specify exact wishes for the policy payout by using beneficiaries and trustees.

Most life insurance providers (Zurich included) will let you write your policy into trust, with no added fees or costs.

Benefits of Zurich life insurance trust deeds

  • Cheaper than a Will (usually free)
  • Express your wishes on your life insurance pay out (e.g. beneficiaries and trustees)
  • Avoid probate (pays out more quickly)
  • Can also help to avoid Inheritance Tax liability (Learn more in our Life Insurance and Tax guide)

Types of Zurich life insurance trusts

  • Zurich Discretionary Trust: this is the most flexible type of trust available which can allow you to change key details at a later point
  • Zurich Absolute Trust: this trust is less flexible, you cannot change who benefits after the trust is in place
  • Zurich Group Life Master Trust: this is designed to be used for business protection policies (Zurich Group Life Insurance)

Zurich will work hard to process any life insurance claim as quickly and sensitively as they can, understanding that having to claim will be a distressing situation. You may need to claim due to the loss of a loved one or possibly claim on your own terminal illness benefit.

A main question about life insurance will be around how much you need to pay. Budget and value for money are key and so it makes sense to wonder about cost before making any decisions.

Below we have some examples of Zurich life insurance monthly premiums (payments) compared to other prices across the market. Premiums can vary over time and not everyone will pay the same even if they are the same age. You could pay more (or less) based on factors such as:

  • The amount of cover needed
  • Type of cover
  • Term of policy
  • Smoker status
  • Your medical history, general health and lifestyle

Policies can cost more for people with pre-existing conditions for example, if you don’t get the right advice first. You should always consider all your options carefully and assess the level of cover and benefits on offer from each provider.
