Travel Insurance for Couples

When you and your partner book a holiday, it is important to have the right financial protection in place, in case anything goes wrong before or during your trip. Travel insurance for couples is a simple way to protect yourself and your partner in one easy-to-manage policy.

This guide has been written by our team of insurance experts to explain how travel insurance for couples works, and how you can save money by buying a joint policy. There are various benefits to buying travel insurance for couples including:

  • Don’t need to keep track of two separate policies
  • Simpler to apply, as there is only one application process
  • Can be cheaper compared to two single policies

Foreign holidays have been soaring in popularity in the last couple of years after couples and families could not travel during the pandemic.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that UK residents made around 28.3 million visits abroad between July and September 2023. According to the latest figures published by Forbes Advisor, around 48% of Brits will buy travel insurance whenever they travel abroad.

Some couples might prefer to buy two separate travel insurance policies, and this can work well in certain situations. Applying through a specialist travel insurance broker allows you to quickly compare prices and policies, to see if joint or single cover will work best for you.

60-Second Summary – Travel Insurance for Couples Complete Guide 2024

Travel insurance for couples is a simple and convenient way to buy the travel insurance that you need to protect your holiday. Joint cover can often be a cheaper option, while still providing all the same benefits as two single travel insurance policies.

Based on our latest research, the average cost of travel insurance for couples is around £15.83 for single trip cover and £25.13 for annual travel cover. Several key things will affect the cost of your cover though, including both of your ages, your trip destination, and the length of the trip (duration).

  • Couples travel insurance policies will protect you against various potential issues that could lead to financial losses. This includes common problems such as loss of luggage, flight delays, and cancellations.
  • You will still be able to add on extra benefits to your travel cover such as winter sports or gadget cover for a higher level of protection.
  • You don’t need to be married to buy travel insurance for couples – but you will usually need to live at the same address. If you don’t, policies like group travel insurance can be a helpful alternative that might work for you.
  • Though you can buy travel insurance for couples, there is no rule stating that you must. There will be some situations where buying two single policies makes more sense (e.g. if one of you has a serious medical condition).
  • Our independent experts have rated CoverForYou as the travel insurance company that provides the best travel insurance for couples. This rating is based on their outstanding customer service and the high value for money offered by their policies.
  • The easiest way to compare the best travel insurance quotes for couples is by applying via a specialist travel insurance broker. This will allow you to quickly compare the best prices and policies from across the market.

You would need to buy a joint or ‘couples’ travel insurance policy if you want travel cover for both you and your partner. Even if you are travelling together, an individual travel insurance policy won’t automatically cover anyone else that you are travelling with.

Travel insurance can save you £100’s or even £1000’s, by allowing you to claim for unexpected expenses like flight delays, lost luggage, and cancellations. Financial experts like Martin Lewis often talk about the importance of buying travel insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday (see Martin Lewis Travel Insurance guide).

Money Man Martin Lewis Shares His Advice On Holiday Insurance and Mortgage Rates | This Morning

Travel insurance for couples allows you and your partner to be covered under one travel insurance policy. This can make buying travel insurance quicker and simpler, as you only need to fill out one application.

A joint policy will work in the same way as an individual policy but will protect both of you. You will both be able to claim for various issues such as delayed flights, or lost luggage that would otherwise mean a significant financial loss.

Most travel insurance companies will provide the option to select single, couples, family, or group travel insurance when you apply. You should pick the option that feels right for you, and couples travel insurance can often be the best and cheapest option when travelling with your partner.

Travel insurance for couples will protect you in a variety of different scenarios that could happen before or during your holiday. Some of the most common things that couples travel insurance will cover are:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Flight delays or cancellations
  • Needing to cancel your holiday before you travel
  • Loss of personal belongings
  • Stolen personal belongings
  • Missed connections (e.g. due to traffic or other issues)
  • Having to cut your trip short due to medical reasons (curtailment)

Most travel insurance companies will allow you to add on extra benefits too like:

You will also be able to buy specific policies for certain types of holidays (e.g. cruise cover). This means that your policy would be designed to cover extra issues based on the specific activities or situations that might happen during your trip.

Is there anything that isn’t covered?

As with any type of insurance, it’s always best to read the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy very carefully. This will let you know if there is anything that your travel insurance company will not pay out for.

Specific high-risk activities (e.g. cliff diving, skiing, scuba diving) won’t always be covered automatically. You should check to see if these are covered if you plan to take part in these activities during your trip.

If you or your partner have medical conditions, it’s important to declare these when you apply or they may not be covered. This means your insurance company could refuse to pay out if you need any medical treatment while you’re away.

No one wants to waste time on a claim that won’t pay out, so it’s important to understand exactly where you stand with your insurance company. If any of your policy documents seem unclear, you may wish to contact your insurance company about anything you aren’t sure of.

Based on our most recent research, the average cost of travel insurance for couples is around £15.83 for a single trip and £25.13 for annual cover. This is compared to an average cost of £18.40 for two single-trip policies and £28.10 for two annual policies.

The cost of travel insurance will be affected by things like your age, your trip destination, how long you are away, and much more. For a couples policy, you might find that the cost of cover is slightly higher if one person is older for example.

The quotes below have been generated on and are accurate as of 19/04/2024. These tables highlight the cheapest available quotes on the market for the example details that our experts have entered. All examples are based on two individuals with no pre-existing medical conditions and don’t include cover for high-risk activities such as winter sports.

Based on these quotes, Admiral is generally the cheapest travel insurance company for couples travel insurance policies. They may not be the cheapest option in every situation though, and the cheapest available policy won’t always be the best one for what you need.

It is always best to apply through a specialist broker, so that you have easy access to prices from across the market.

Travel insurance for couples can be cheaper than buying two single travel insurance policies, but it won’t always be. Our independent insurance experts have put together the tables below to highlight the potential difference in price between single and joint travel insurance.

Single trip travel insurance

Annual travel insurance

Person’s ageCost of travel insurance for couples (£s)Cost of two single travel insurance policiesPrice difference (£s)
Both applicants are aged 25£23.72 (Admiral)£24.00 (£12.00 x 2)£0.28
Both applicants are aged 30£20.38 (Admiral)£24.00 (£12.00 x 2)£3.26
Both applicants are aged 35£21.30 (Admiral)£25.90 (£12.95 x 2)£4.60

Both applicants are aged 60£37.40 (Admiral)£35.96 (£17.98 x 2)£1.44

For these examples, we have taken the cost of one single policy and multiplied it by two (for two applicants of the same age). In reality, you and your partner may be different ages or other factors could mean that one policy is more expensive than the other.

As we can see from the figures above, it is often possible to save anywhere between around £3 – £6 or £7 by buying a joint travel insurance policy.

These examples are simply intended to demonstrate that a couples policy can be cheaper in some situations but not in every case. It is usually worth checking and comparing prices between single and joint cover, to see which option is cheapest for you.

There are no rules in the UK that mean that a couple must share any form of insurance policy. Many couples will have separate policies for travel insurance, as well as other forms of insurance (e.g. life insurance, health insurance).

If you and your partner would prefer to buy your travel insurance separately, this is perfectly fine. There are also various scenarios where it would make more sense to have two separate policies such as:

  • There is an age difference which means that joint cover would suddenly become more expensive for the younger partner
  • One partner might have medical conditions which would make the whole policy more expensive
  • One partner might prefer to use a specialist insurance company due to their health or hobbies (e.g. winter sports while on holiday)
  • One partner might want to add on additional cover (e.g. gadget cover) that the other partner doesn’t need
  • One partner might travel more frequently and want an annual policy, and the other might want cover for only one trip

You should think about if you really need joint cover, or if two separate policies are more suitable for your trip.

Travel Insurance provider reviews

Some couples travel insurance policies will allow you to travel separately and still be covered under one policy. This can be helpful if one of you needs to fly back on an earlier date due to work, childcare etc.

If this applies, it can also be useful if you have bought an annual policy, and one of you is travelling whilst the other stays at home. If you’re unsure of whether your policy will allow you to travel separately, this should be explained within your policy documents.

Generally, you will need to live at the same address to apply for a couples travel insurance policy. There are certain types of travel cover (e.g. group travel insurance) that might be available as an alternative if you and your partner don’t live together.

Group travel insurance policies also protect multiple people, and there isn’t a requirement for you to live together. You can even cover up to 10 or more people, so this might be useful if you are travelling with a larger group (e.g. extended family or friends).

Travel insurance for couples isn’t exclusively for married couples or couples in a civil partnership. You can buy a couples travel insurance policy no matter how long you and your partner have been together, and marital status won’t affect the policies that are available to you.

If you have recently gotten married, you may be able to buy a policy known as ‘honeymoon insurance’. This will work similarly to normal travel insurance but will cover extra events related to your wedding/honeymoon.

If one or both of you have a pre-existing condition, it will be best to apply through a medical travel insurance specialist. An experienced travel insurance expert will be able to compare prices from a range of the UK’s top insurance companies, as well as more specialist providers.

Most of us will book our holidays weeks, months, or even years in advance, which means there’s a lot of time for things to potentially go wrong. You might book a holiday and buy travel insurance with your partner, only to split up before you’re due to travel.

Sadly, this is a common occurrence but there are things that you can do if this happens. Firstly, if neither of you wants to go on the holiday, you may be able to cancel the entire trip and get some or all of the money back.

Most travel insurance policies will include cancellation cover as standard, but this probably will not pay out in this situation. Cancellation cover tends to be more for situations such as being seriously ill or injured, or if a close family member dies or is seriously unwell.

If one of you still wants to go on the holiday, you can cancel your current couples travel insurance policy and buy a new one to protect yourself. You are always entitled to cancel your travel insurance policy for any reason without facing fees or issues.

If you need to cancel your travel insurance policy, you will have to get in touch with your travel insurance company directly. You should be able to find contact details in any policy documents that you have been sent, or on their company website.

Once you have informed them that you no longer need your policy, they will take care of everything for you. If you want to switch from a couples to an individual policy, they may be able to help with this over the phone.

Note: It is sometimes possible to get a refund for your policy, but this depends on the policy itself and the insurance company. Some companies (e.g. Coverwise) will provide a full refund if you haven’t already travelled and you’re not intending to claim.

Comparing multiple quotes is the best way to make sure that you’re getting the best possible price and value for money from your travel insurance policy.

The easiest way to compare the best travel insurance quotes for couples is by using a specialist comparison website. This will allow you to quickly compare policy features and prices to choose the cover that best fits your budget.

What does Martin Lewis say about travel insurance?

Martin Lewis provides lots of guidance for holidaymakers who are searching for the best deals on their travel insurance. One of the biggest recommendations from Martin Lewis travel insurance advice is ‘ASAB’ (As Soon As you Book), which basically translates to suggesting that you should buy your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

In an interview on This Morning talking to Martin Lewis about travel insurance, he claims that he is constantly being asked by consumers, “what can I do if I’ve been diagnosed with a medical problem and I can’t go on holiday because my travel company won’t give me a refund?”. According to Martin Lewis travel insurance recommendations, 50% of the value of your travel insurance cover is before you are due to travel.

Top reasons for holiday cancellations before travelling:

  • Sickness or illness
  • Accidents causing an injury
  • Emergency at home
  • Family emergency
  • Work commitments

Is it worth taking out travel insurance?

Almost all financial experts such as Martin Lewis and citizensadvice.org.uk, strongly recommend that you take out a travel insurance policy and that you do it quickly. The financial and emotional impact of not having travel insurance while overseas can be catastrophic if you require medical treatment or if you are victim of a crime.

The cost of travel insurance is generally affordable for most holidaymakers and you should factor this in to the cost of your holiday. Risking not having travel insurance and then having a medical emergency when you are overseas, especially in certain destinations, can cost you thousands.

What does travel insurance cover?

Most travel insurance policies will provide the same core elements such as medical emergencies, repatriation, legal expenses, loss, theft or damage to personal belongings, and cancellation or curtailment of your trip. The types and levels of cover can vary dramatically from one policy to another so you should make sure that you’re getting the cover that you want and that you need.

Also, some travel insurance policies won’t cover you for certain destinations, activities or types of holidays, such as:

  • Cruise holidays
  • Winter sports
  • Worldwide travel
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Note: Travel insurance will generally exclude any accident or injury that has happened whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

What is classed as a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance?

According to one of the UK’s top travel insurance providers, Staysure clearly states that ‘you must declare ALL pre-existing medical conditions when your take out a travel insurance policy’. Witholding any information about your health or medical history could expose you to the risks of rendering your cover invalid and therefore class any claims as ‘null and void’.

Any of the following pre-existing conditions must always be disclosed on your travel insurance application:

  • Cardiovascular conditions (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease etc.)
  • Cancer(s)
  • Any Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

You should also let your travel insurance provider know about any of the following medical investigations, tests or treatments in the past two years:

  • Symptoms (whether or not you have consulted a doctor)
  • Medication or treatments
  • Scans or investigations
  • Medical appointments and check-ups
  • Surgery
