What is the average cost of family travel insurance?
The average cost of a typical family travel insurance policy is between £24 and £28 for a single trip policy and approximately £65 for an annual or multi-trip policy. This is based on our research of over 100 family travel insurance policies from the top holiday insurance companies.
The cost of your policy will vary depending on:
Type of Policy: Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip
A single trip policy should always be the cheaper option for a one-off holiday with your family. If you’re planning on more than two holidays with your family in a twelve month period, then you may want to consider annual family travel insurance cover.
Holiday destination: European or Worldwide cover
If you’re travelling to a destination outside of Europe (e.g. USA, Canada, Australia, Mexico etc.) then you should check to see if it is included on your policy. Some areas are covered on European travel insurance, so it’s worth checking before you travel.
Medical history: Pre-existing medical conditions
If any of your family has a pre-existing medical condition (e.g. diabetes, high BMI, epilepsy, heart conditions, cancer etc.) then you would normally pay a higher premium for your family travel insurance. It is important to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions on your application.
Sports and Activities: Winter sports cover
Thousands of families every year travel to holiday destinations, such as the Alps, to take part in winter sports and other activities. If your family holiday involves an activity or sport (e.g. skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, sailing, diving etc.) then you should make sure that this is covered by your holiday insurance.
Number of travellers: Adults and Children
Families are all different and family travel insurance should cater for most dynamics (usually up to eight children and two adults). If you are travelling in a large group or if your family is made up of several different groups then you should check your policy to make sure that everyone is covered.

What is covered by family travel insurance?
Most policies will cover the basics and will offer protection for the most common things that can happen on a family holiday. Each policy will have different levels and limits, so you should just check to make sure that you are fully protected.
- Medical treatment and medical emergencies: if you or your family requires emergency medical treatment or medical care (e.g. medication, medical appointments etc.) then your policy should cover the cost of this. Even basic medical care can be extremely costly when travelling abroad, especially for children.
- Cancellation and curtailment cover: there are many reasons why you might need to cancel your holiday or return home early, and this is more common than you might think. Your travel insurance policy should cover the cost of this and any lost money from your unused holiday.
- Luggage, money and belongings: travel insurance should pay for the replacement or repair of any lost, stolen, or damaged items when travelling abroad.
NOTE: You might also want to get a free EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) to make sure that you receive equivalent treatment and care to what you would get in the UK. These are not designed to replace travel insurance.
What isn’t covered by family travel insurance?
There are also several standard exclusions with most family travel insurance policies that you should be aware of.
- Under the influence: if you suffer an injury or if you’re involved in an accident whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs then you won’t be covered.
- Pre-existing medical conditions: any medical conditions won’t typically be covered by a standard family holiday insurance policy, unless you disclose your medical history and declare it to your insurer.
- Sports and Activities: you will need to disclose any hazardous, dangerous, and extreme sports that you intend to take part in during your family holiday for these to be covered.
- Force majeure (natural disasters): most travel insurance policies will not include cover for natural disasters or forces of nature.
- Areas of conflict: there are some destinations that are considered to be dangerous to travel to (see FCDO guidance) and these are not typically covered.
- Acts of terrorism: in the unlikely event that you have been affected by an act of terrorism, then your policy may not include this in your cover.
Note: You should check your family travel insurance policy wording very carefully to make sure that it protects everyone in your party.
